Barbara Vicknair

    Barbara Vicknair, born to the late Lindford and Zola Palmer on Oct. 23, 1939, passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2016.
    She was loved by her three children, Brian Vicknair, Jennifer Knibbs-Dawes and David Vicknair; and her son-in-law, Vick Knibbs-Dawes and daughter-in-law, Elle Vicknair. Her grandchildren are Patrick and Brian Hart, and Ansley, Alana, Katon, Samantha and Nicole Vicknair. She is survived by her brothers, Jay, Roy and John Palmer; and her sister, Susie Taylor and brother-in-law Larry Taylor.
    She was predeceased by her brother, the late Floyd Palmer.
    Not only did Barbara love and cherish her family, but she also placed great value on her community. She served as the first female county commissioner of Cherokee County from 1998 to 2006. She also served as chairman of the Cherokee Indian Community Club from 2013-14 and treasurer in 2015. She served on the board of Balsam West and on the Murphy Town Council from 2009 until her passing. She also served as both president and treasurer of the Valley River Humane Society and was a loving mother to two adopted gorgeous black cats, Mindy and Mia.
    Barbara, our mother and dear friend to many, will be missed.
    A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel. Eulogies will be given by her children, family and friends.
    The family will receive friends from noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.
    In lieu of flowers, please donate on our mother’s behalf to the Valley River Humane Society, P.O. Box 658, Murphy, NC 28906.
