Fannie Smart

    Fannie Stalcup Smart, 96, of Hayesville, died Monday, July 25, 2016, in a Gastonia hospital.
    She was a native of Cherokee County, but Fannie lived in Clay County most of her life. She worked for many years as a seamstress for Carolina Dress.
    Fannie was a member of Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
    Fannie was noted for her cooking and famous for her sweet potato souffle, dried apple fried pies and apple snack cake.
    She was the daughter of the late Alexander Richardson and Ada Haney Stalcup, and wife of the late George W. Smart, who died Sept. 11, 1952. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Ira, Alwayne, Juanita and Bonnie; and six brothers, Arby, Glenn, Horace, Frank, Lake and Charles.
    Surviving are a daughter, Judy Giles and husband Dan of Charlotte; a son, Charles Smart and wife Janie of Leasburg; three grandchildren, Wendi Byas and husband  Karl, and George and Isaac Smart; and three great-grandchildren, Kelly and Owen Byas, and Autumn Smart.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 29, in Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jackie Sellers officiating. The interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were George, Isaac and Kenny Smart, Ronnie Clayton, John Stalcup and Billy Garrett.
    The family received friends from noon-1:45 p.m. Friday, July 29, at Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church prior to the services.
    The family requests memorials be made in memory of Fannie Stalcup Smart to Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Betty Ashe, 285 W.J. Cabe Road, Hayesville, NC 28904.
    Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, was in charge of all arrangements.
