Robert Garland Sr., 83, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at his residence.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County; son of the late Fred and Tessie McAfee Garland.
Robert retired as a crusher and hoist operator in the Tennessee Chemical Co. after 34 years of service.
He enjoyed raising and trading beef cattle, and also cracking black walnuts, which he shared with family and friends.
In addition to his parents,he was preceded in death by one sister, Johnnie Ledford, and one brother, Claud Garland.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Clonts Garland; two sons, Robert Garland Jr. of Xiamen, China, and Kenny Garland and wife Carmen of Whiteville; two sisters, Nellie Barber and husband Pete of Deltona, Fla., and Billie Miller and husband Ronald of Tunnel Hill, Ga.; and two grandsons, Lucas Garland and Camden Garland.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 11, at Townson-Rose Chapel in Murphy. The Rev. Steve Ware officiated. Pallbearers were Jackie Bryant, James Bryant, Jerry Curtis, Larry Cheek, Wayne Purcell and Harold Garland.
