
William “Bill” Jack Hughes, 86, of Murphy, passed away at home on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017.
Bill was a native of Cherokee County, and the youngest son of 16 children of the late W. Astor Hughes and Lillie Bell Crisp Hughes.
He was a U.S. World War II Army veteran, and served in Germany 1948-50 as part of the 862nd Engineer Aviation Battalion at Rheem Air Force Base.
Bill was a retired boilermaker with Boilermaker’s National.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing and playing the guitar.
Bill was a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Moore Hughes; one daughter, Wanda Hughes Roberts; one grandson, John Clark; eight brothers, Otis Hughes, Walter Hughes, Harford Hughes, Emory Hughes, Bradford Hughes, Wayne Postell, Grady Postell and George Postell; and five sisters, Louise Lance, Edna Stalcup, Jo Williams, Ruth Owensby and Christine Anderson.
He is survived by one brother, Clay Hughes of Oregon; his children, Mike Hughes of South Carolina, Brenda Williams and husband Tim of Copperhill, Tenn., and Randy Hughes and wife Wendy of Candler; grandchildren, Jessica Chadwick, Heather Bresch, Adrienne Clark Higdon, Brandon Hughes and Brooke Hughes; and great-grandchildren, Kayla Brooks, Rhowan Bresch and Susanna Chadwick.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Townson Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Rev. Derek Tilley officiated. Burial was in Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post 10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post 96 and DAV Chapter 73, and American Legion Post 532 of Hayesville and VFWPost 6812. Pallbearers were Neil Chadwick, Jeremy Bresch, Alan Moore, David Yonce, Jason Killian and Larry Curtis. Honorary pallbearers were Tim Panter and Harold Moore.
The family received friends from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home.
