Thomas Bryce Burrell

    Thomas Bryce Burrell, 42, of Murphy, passed away Friday, Nov. 4, 2016, at Murphy Medical Center.
    Bryce was born in Cherokee County. He was the son of Thomas Ronnie and Patricia Marie Nix Burrell of Murphy.
    Bryce was an Army dependent for 14 years. He had been a self-employed painter. Bryce enjoyed painting and fishing. He loved spending time with his boys. Bryce’s  dream was to travel.
    In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sons, Ethan Nathaniel Burrell and Thomas Evan Burrell, both of Murphy; brothers, Shannon Blake Phillips of Mississippi and Christian Brent Burrell of Murphy; sister, Morgan Brittanee Burrell of Murphy; nephew, Blake Steven Phillips; nieces, Aliyah Martinez and Elena Martinez, and Paisley Christian Burrell, all of Murphy.
    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Revs. Ben Adams and Chris Rumfelt will officiate. Burial will be in Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Shannon Phillips, Christian Burrell, Jermell Sudderth, Dwayne Stewart, Channing Wilson and Chris Stewart. Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Dockery and Ted Sneed.
    The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bryce’s two sons, Ethan Burrell and Evan Burrell, 3914 Hanging Dog Road, Murphy, NC 28906.

Margaret Bloom

    Margaret Bloom, 81, of Murphy, passed away Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016, at her home.
    She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee Count, and daughter of the late Claude R. and Etta Rhodes Kincaid.
    Margaret was a private extraordinary home caregiver for more than 30 years to many families in the Murphy area.
    She is survived by two daughters, Linda Bloom of Murphy and her family, Daniel Nichols and wife Megan and his family, Bryan Chad Nichols and wife Amy, and his family and Thomas “T.J” Nichols; Sharon Whitehead and husband Mick of Marietta, Ga., and their family, Courtney A. Newton, Megan A. Newton and Victoria L. Whitehead; she also is survived by her friend and family physician, Dr. Brian Mitchell.
    Graveside services were  held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Scott Cole officiated. Pallbearers were Daniel Nichols, Bryan Chad Nichols, Ben Crisp, Jon Crisp, Thomas “T.J.” Nichols and Luke Nichols. Honorary pallbearers were Mick R. Whitehead and Brandon Pendergrass.
    The family receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.

    Mr. Rea Colfax Williams Jr., 80, of Chatuge Village Circle, Hayesville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, in the Clay County Nursing Home following an extended illness.
    Mr. Williams was born on Sept. 13, 1936, in Indiana, the son of the late Rea Colfax Williams Sr. and Sarah Currier.
    He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Rea was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He loved playing the French horn, shooting and gardening.
    He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Rea was of the Christian faith.
    He was preceded in death by two sons, Christopher and Gregory Williams.
     Surviving Mr. Williams are his loving wife and best friend of 54 years, Clara Williams of Hayesville; one son, Geoffrey Williams of Hayesville; and many other relatives and friends also survive.
    A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday Nov. 12, from the Marble Springs Masonic Lodge No. 439. Brother Greg Huskins will officiate.
    The family will meet with friends following the service.
    In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the Hurricane Disaster Relief in Mr. William’s memory.

    Helen Sims Rose, 82, of Lawrenceville, Ga., and formerly of Ducktown, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016, in Lawrenceville, Ga.
    She was born in Abbyville, Kan., to the late Andrew Johnson and Delphia Elizabeth Lance Sims.
    Helen was a retired sales administrator for a small engine repair service. She attended Mine City Baptist Church in Turtletown, Tenn.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Rose; a daughter, Patricia Gerald; and brother, Gordon Sims.
    She is survived by her son, Theron Rose; daughters, Kathleen McKenzie and Charlotte Sadler; brothers, Bud Sims, Jerry Sims, Steve Sims and Richard Sims; and sisters, Louise Skiles and Audrey Seaton.
    Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy.  Burial was in Violet Cemetery.

    John David Rodda, “Pops,” returned to the loving arms of our Lord on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, in Marietta, Ga. He was 68.
    For those that did not know him, he was a man who firmly believed in his God and the principles of this great American country. He sacrificed much in life to secure the prosperity and happiness of his family and fellowman.
    He was a Master electrician, painter, poet and devoted family man. He lovingly and supportively went the extra mile to communicate with so many in his life, whether near or far. His eloquent, hand-written letters, and notes will continue to comfort us all as his loving spirit lives on.
    He was our friend, our brother, our uncle, our nephew, our amazing Dad, devoted husband and our living icon of God’s love. He was our Pops.
    John was born Dec. 28, 1947, in Andrews. He was the son of the late Dr. John Sydney Rodda and Katherine Crutcher Rodda.
    He is survived by his soulmate and wife of 36 years, Sharon Connell Rodda. Also, his children, John (Kelly) Rodda, Chris Rodda, Buddy Burkart, Robin (Todd) Swenson; and his 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Additionally, his younger sister Susan (Banks) Garrison and their two children, Kevin and Katherine, and his aunt,  Gloria Rodda. Lastly, he is leaving behind many great friends and neighbors, but none more special than his lifelong childhood confidant, Chuck (Becky) VanGorder.
    John attended Andrews Elementary School and graduated from Baylor School for Boys in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he recently enjoyed his 50th high school reunion.
    He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served proudly in the U.S. Army.
    A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 882 Main St. in Andrews.
    The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Joanne Guggisberg

    Joanne (Ahle) Guggisberg, 73, of Warne, passed away Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center as a result of an automobile accident.
    Born and raised in New Ulm, Minn., and a longtime resident of Fort Wayne, Ind., she had lived in Warne since 2000.
    She was the tender and beloved wife of Ronald Guggisberg for 52 blessed years.  She was the proud and loving mother of four children: Lisa (Franklind) Lea of Alpharetta, Ga., Gail (Brian) Doran of Fort Wayne, Ind., Timothy Guggisberg (Julie Tovey) of Williamston, S.C., and Ann Guggisberg (Philip Ruzycki) of St. Louis, Mo. She was the devoted grandmother of three grandsons, Eric Doran, Alan Doran and Russell Lea.
    She loved her family with her heart and soul, supporting them through all the small and big moments in life. The warmth of her hugs and the sound of her laughter will remain in our hearts.
    She also is survived by her brothers, Myron Ahle of St. Cloud, Minn., and Jack Ahle of Largo, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Cora Ahle.
    Joanne was a dedicated servant in everything she did. She was active with the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hayesville, where she started the Faith Formation classes for children.
    She volunteered and served as president at Granny’s Thrift Store supporting the Good Shepherd Hospice, also in Hayesville.
    Many may know her from Tiger’s Department Store in Hayesville.
    She also supported the Warne Volunteer Fire Department and many other groups in the community.   
    She always had a project or two (or 10) in the works.  She looked ahead in life and was never discouraged; there was never a reason to give up.  She danced through her life with love and laughter. She will always be with us ... in our hearts, in our memories, in our lives.   
    The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville.
    A funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hayesville.  The church family provided a meal following the Mass.
    The interment was held at a later date in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm, Minn.

    Richard Whitener, 71, of Murphy, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016, at his daughter’s home.
    He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, and the son of the late John Ernest and Edna Selena Taylor Whitener.
    He retired from the timber industry.
    Richard attended New Hope Church of God.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Whitener; and a sister, Janie Lovingood.
    He is survived by his wife, Shirley Dockery Whitener; children, Amanda Whitener, Jamie Whitener and stepdaughter, Pam Barmore; brothers and a sister, Leroy Whitener and wife Frances, Harvey Whitener and wife Kathy, Michael Whitener and wife Martha and Iva Jean Hendrix and husband Sidney; brother-in-law, Carl Dockery who was a true friend; sister-in-law, Bea Whitener; grandchildren, Warren Dodson, Dustin Dever, Justin Chance, Whitney Tanner, Christian Gentry and Brailey Barmore; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at noon Saturday, Nov. 19, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Pastor Scotty Lovingood officiated. Burial was in Ogreeta Cemetery.

Edwin Hendrix

    Edwin Clarence Hendrix, 81, of Murphy, died peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016, in his home.
    He was born July 4, 1935, in Cherokee County.
    Edwin graduated from Western Carolina University. He had a brief career teaching in Cherokee County Schools before he became the director of the local North Carolina Probation Office, where he was employed until his retirement. He continued as a resource person reviewing cases on the state level.
    Edwin was a member and deacon of Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church.
    Edwin enjoyed collecting cars, bicycles, large gasoline signs and guns.
    He was a big fan of the actor, Roy Rogers. Edwin met him and had his picture made with him. That was a prized possession, which he shared often with visitors.
    He was the son of the late Clarence and Meb Sudderth Hendrix. He was also preceded in death by a twin brother, David Monroe Hendrix; and a sister, Mildred Hendrix Stewart.
    Surviving are his wife, Patsy Jones Hendrix; a son, Michael Edwin Hendrix and wife Dina of Murphy; a granddaughter, Claire Hendrix; a grandson, Grant Hendrix; and several cousins, nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, with Davis Bryant officiating. The interment will be in Peachtree Community Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Earl Bradshaw, G.W. Hendrix, Jerry Sudderth, Franklin Barnett, Jim Hendrix and Todd Davis.
    The family will receive friends from noon-1:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, prior to the services.

    Leona Cornwell, 91, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, at Murphy Medical Center.
    She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, and the daughter of the late Colonel Ernest Harding and Rhoda Ledford Harding.
    During World War II, she was an electrical inspector for airplane bombers.
    Leona was a lifetime member of Murphy First Baptist Church and sang in the choir. She was a member of Murphy First Baptist Church Birthday Club and the Business Professional Women’s Club.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Burton “B.B.” Cornwell; two brothers, Cecil and Winfred Harding; and one sister, Inez Carroll.
    She is survived by four daughters, Debra Palmer and husband Roy of Brasstown, Sandra Hyatt and husband Bass of Brasstown, Bebeie McClure and husband Kenneth of Marble and Rhonda Owenby and husband Dennis of Fairview; one sister, Irene Mundy and husband Randle of Murphy; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Pastor Jimmy Tanner officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

    Mrs. Arvetta D. Cook, 80, of Marietta, Ga., died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016.  
    A native of Murphy, Mrs. Cook was a founding member of Cheatham Hill Baptist Church.
    She is survived by her husband, Willie Cook; daughter, Cheryl Cook; grandchildren, Carrie Ray and Jared Barnes; and her great-granddaughter, Kimberly Ray.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at Carmichael Funeral Home Chapel in Marietta. Interment will follow at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park.

    Mr. Jack Harold Phillips, 80, of Taylors Creek Road in Andrews, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday Nov. 23, 2016, following an extended illness.
    Mr. Phillips was born Aug. 22, 1936, in Andrews, the son of the late Gordon Phillips and Blanche Luther Phillips. He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County.
    Jack loved fishing, hunting, woodworking and was very active in his church. He was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather.
    Jack was a member of Valley River Baptist Church.
    He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Katelon Phillips; and a brother, Marvin Phillips.
    Surviving Mr. Phillips are his loving wife and best friend of  57 years, Jean Hall Phillips of Andrews; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Randy and Cherry Phillips of Andrews, Gary Phillips and his fiancee, Delynn Culp, of Adairsville, Ga.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and L.V. Blaylock, Ina and Mike Wheeler; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Bill and Faye Phillips, the Rev. Roy and Marie Phillips, Melvin Phillips, all of Andrews; five grandchildren, Curtis and Misty Phillips, Chris and Lisa Adams, Brittany Phillips, Mashala Phillips and Dylan Phillips; three step grandchildren, Keith Gould, Krystal Donald and Amanda Holden;  seven great-grandchildren, three step great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends also survive.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday Nov. 26, from Valley River Baptist Church with the Revs. Eddie Hardin, Steve West, Shane Kirby and John Hall officiating. Special music will be presented by Wilton Ensley, Rolin Phillips and the church choir. Serving as pallbearers will be Jack’s nephews and close friends. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Valley River Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

    Phyllis Moore, 82, of Murphy, passed away Friday, Nov. 25, 2016, at her residence.
    She was born in Washington, D.C., to the late Ray and Dorothy Powell Lynch.
    Phyllis was a supervisor in housekeeping.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Lynch.
    She is survived by her husband, Ralph Moore; stepmother, Doris Lynch of Hagersdown, Md.; two sisters, Patricia Robinson and husband Doug of McDonough, Ga., and Mary Lee Elwood and husband Frederick of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.

    Laura James, 82, of Marble,  passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2016, at Murphy Medical Center.
    She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, and the daughter of the late Utie and Maggie Barker Raxter.
    Laura worked in the cafeteria in the Cherokee County school system. She was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed Word Search puzzles. Laura loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, J.D. Derreberry and second husband, Authur “Jesse” James; one son, Michael James; her twin sister, Lula Day, and sisters, Barbara Sain and Alma Almond; one brother, Lawson Raxter; and one son-in-law, Jim Burton.
    She is survived by her children, Gloria Burton, Audy James and wife Pam, Gary James and wife Karen, Tammy Eller, Keith Derreberry and wife Pattie, Jeffery James and wife Jeanie, and Krystal Day and husband Scott; three brothers, Clayton Raxter, Sonny Raxter and Garland Raxter; grandchildren, Jesse James and wife Anna, Aimee Day, Kimberly Bowers and husband Justin, Ashley James, Andy James and wife Aneka, Christopher James and wife Emily, Jeremiah Chancey and wife Scarlett, Justin Abernathy and Jeremy Abernathy; several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

    Shirley May (Day) Hores-Jackson, passed away onto a heavenly shore after an extended illness on Monday, Nov. 21, 2016, with loving family members by her side.
    Born Feb. 6, 1922, in Bogota, N.J., Shirley lived most of her life in New Jersey with residences in Florida and North Carolina.
    A member of her high school fencing team, Shirley enjoyed conversation and visits with friends and family. Shirley was avid about crocheting, loved to sew and make her own clothes.
    She served as corresponding secretary of the Shark River Hills Beach Club, Neptune, and president of HOA of Citrus Woods, Fla.
    While raising her family, Shirley sold real estate and was employed for more than 20 by the federal government.
    Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth F. Jackson.
    She is survived by two daughters, Maureen Frances Mills and husband Richard, and Barbara Lee Gamble and husband Frederick; two sons, Clifford J. and wife Christine Hores and James Martin Hores; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
    Shirley was loved by everyone that she knew, and all that met her felt her pleasant and positive approach to life.
    A memorial service will be held at a later date.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.
