Shirley Zimmerman

    Shirley Hancock Jones Zimmerman, 73, of Marble, passed away Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at her son’s residence in Hoover, Ala., after an extended illness.
    She was a native of Cherokee County and the daughter of the late Clint and Anna Lee Hancock.
    She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Hoyt Zimmerman; one son, Keith Jones and wife Terri of Hoover, Ala.; one grandchild, Amy Jones Frazer and husband Chris of Nashville, Tenn.; two stepchildren, Keith Zimmerman and wife Kim of Murphy and Stacy Allore and husband Jeff of Blairsville, Ga.; one sister, Shelby Ware and husband Ron of Knoxville, Tenn.; five step-grandchildren, Megan Swanson and Levi Zimmerman of Murphy, Kailyn Cornwell of Franklin, Trevor Crouch of Cullowhee and Rachel Allore of Chapel
Hill; and two great-grandchildren, Owen and Ransen Swanson.
    Shirley retired from MGM Brakes after 30 years of service in human resources. She enjoyed shopping, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
    Shirley, at heart, was a homemaker. She will best be remembered for the way she cared for and took interest in the lives of those she loved. She was a wonderful cook and took pride in preparing meals for her family.
    Shirley was a strong woman. Despite facing heartache in her life, she had a steadfast belief in her Lord, Jesus Christ, and was a faithful servant.
    The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy.
    Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, in the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Revs. Aud Brown and Jimmy Rogers will officiate. Music will be provided by Kaitlynn Pope accompanied by Becky Brown. Pallbearers will be Larry Kernea, Gary Westmoreland, Jerry Farner, Levi Zimmerman, Trevor Crouch and Jeff Allore. Burial will follow in Tomolta Cemetery, where she will be interred by her beloved son, David.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzeimers Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., FL 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

May 2, 1975 – Jan. 10, 2017
    Jay William Arrowood, 41, of Peachtree, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, at his home following a brief illness.
    Jay was a loving son who enjoyed hunting, fishing, being in the outdoors and spending time with his best friend, Heidi ‘O.
    He had lived in Peachtree all his life and was of the Baptist faith.
    He was preceded in death by his father, Wiley Arrowood, who passed away in 2015.
    Mr. Arrowood is survived by his mother, Marie Arrowood of Peachtree. Also surviving Jay are his grandparents, Gene and Lillian Guffey; his uncle, Eddie Arrowood; two aunts, Joy Rose and Barbara Walkey; and special friend, Cynthia Waldroup. Several nieces, nephews, along with lots and lots of friends and family also survive.
    A celebration of life service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at Old Fashioned Baptist Church in Martins Creek community.

    Carole Joan Beatrice Queen, 77, of Murphy, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, at Valley View Care Center.
    She was a native of Union County, Ga., and the daughter of the late Henry and Ruby Dillard Elliott.
    Carole was a homemaker. She enjoyed doing crafts and sewing.
    Carole was a member of Ranger United Methodist Church.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Queen; and brother, Charles Elliott.
    She is survived by a son, Robbie Queen and his wife, Vicki, of Hayesville; a daughter, April Ellison and her husband, Doug, of Murphy; one brother, Vaughn Elliott of the Ranger community; one sister, Chris McKinney of Spruce Pine; grandchildren, Robi Elliott, Autumn Lyvers, Elliott Queen, December Queen, Josey Ellison and Blake Brooks; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
    A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Ranger United Methodist Church in Murphy.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 871 Weisgarber Road, Knoxville, TN 37909.

Marion Wiggins

    Marion Douglas (Papaw) Wiggins, born Jan. 12, 1943, of Hiwassee Dam, left this world to be with his Savior on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at age 74.
    He was a native of Cherokee County, and the son of the late Ralph Edward and Ethel Johnson Wiggins.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Denver, Jimmy and Howard Wiggins.
    He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Catherine Ware Wiggins; one son, Randy Douglas Wiggins and his wife, Tonya Reid Wiggins, and two grandchildren, Kyle Douglas Wiggins and Kaileyanna Farrah Wiggins, all of Hiwassee Dam; one brother, Ricky Wiggins and wife Margie of Lexington, Ky.; three sisters, Peggy Wiggins Mahoney and husband Mike of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Janice Wiggins Huskins and husband Marvin of Dallas, and Nancy Wiggins Chambers and husband Rick of Peachtree; and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.
    He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran who faithfully served his nation for 20-plus years at home and abroad, receiving many commendations, medals, badges and decorations. The highlight of his military career was to serve as one of eight sergeants first class elected to train West Point Military Academy Cadets during the summer of 1981. Under his leadership, his company of cadets placed first in all rounds of competition and respectively received top honors overall in its performance.
    After retiring from the Army, he was employed by Walmart Stores Inc. in Murphy for 17½ years, primarily as a department manager until his retirement to enjoy more time with his grandchildren.
    He was a dedicated member of Bear Paw Baptist Church, where he served the Lord faithfully.
    The family received friends from 6-9 p.m. Monday Jan. 16, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy.
    Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Revs. Steve Ware and Farris Reid officiated. Pallbearers were Randy Wiggins, Kyle Wiggins, Ronnie Ware, Gary Ware, Tommy Taylor and Phil Wilcox. Honorary pallbearers were Kailey Wiggins, Edwin Walls, Marvin Taylor, Eddie Taylor and Jerry Ware. Special pallbearer was Wayne Roberts. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Peachtree.
    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bear Paw Baptist Church in care of Phil Wilcox, 3401 Hiwassee Dam Access Road, Murphy, NC 28906, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Franklin Rowland

Aug. 5, 1933 – Jan. 14, 2017
    For a man to serve his country, it is an honor and privilege … Franklin Delano Rowland was that kind of man and served in the U.S.  Army during the Korean War, where he served in the Aleutian Islands as a combat engineer to defend our flag for its freedom.
    Known as a fine young man and one of 10 children, Frank was a farmer who loved raising cattle, rabbit hunting and fishing and was a beekeeper that gave the harvested honey to his family and friends. Frank gave his all in everything he did.
    He was a cabinet maker by profession and was instrumental in constructing the roof for Catawba Heights Church.
    To add, Frank was a Free Mason and member of the Mount Holly Masonic Lodge No. 544 AF&AM.
    Frank was the son of the late Andrew Jefferson Rowland and Bertha Bradshaw Rowland. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Elizabeth Rowland; his nine siblings, Robert, A.J., Croft, Cliff, James, Callie, Mildred, Viola and Chloe.
    Those left to cherish the memories of Frank are his wife of 63 years, Sylvia Graves Rowland; son and daughterr-in-law, Frank “Dale” and Deborah Rowland of Burke, Va.; daughter and son-in-law,  Teresa and Perry Johnson of Gastonia; two sisters, Lois Hall and Ruth Revels; grandchildren, Chris Johnson and wife Tiffany, Ethan Johnson and wife Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Ellie, Elijah and Savannah Johnson, Amber Rowland.
    A Life Well Celebrated Ceremony and committal service with military honors accorded by the Gaston County Honor Guard and U.S. Army was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, in the Singing Tower Garden at Gaston Memorial Park, 1200 South New Hope Road in Gastonia.
    Frank’s family greeted guest from 11-2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Carothers Funeral Home Chapel 2205 Williamsburg Drive in Gastonia.

    Dorothy June Dillard, 79, of Morganton, Ga., was called home to be with her Lord on  Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, from her home.
    June was born Feb. 19, 1937, in Murphy, to the late Rollin and Lou Martin Taylor.
    She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. June enjoyed bowling, cooking, sewing, riding horses and spending time with her family.
    She worked for Levi’s in Blue Ridge, Ga., for 13 years.
    June was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Lee Dillard; son, Terry Dillard; brothers, Rollin Taylor Jr., James Oakland Taylor, Lewis Hamilton Taylor, Robert Lon Taylor and Kermit Taylor; and  sisters, Norma Lee Jones and Mary Ruth Chastain.
    Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Michael Wynn and Brenda Dillard;  daughter, Dalila Teresa Dillard; daughter, Bobbie Samantha Lynn Wallace; brother, Thomas Taylor; sister, Bobbie Ellen Swartz; grandchildren, Heather Bain, Susan Kennedy, Samantha Brown, Carrie Roberts, Amanda Cochran, Courtney Watters, Shawn Paul Dillard Ralston and Stephen Michael Ralston;  11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
    A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

    Anna Sue Graves Stiles, 75, of Robbinsville, formerly of Murphy, went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2017, at her home while surrounded by her family.
    She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Don and Marie Mills Graves; three brothers, Marshall Graves, Tommy Graves and Christopher Graves; and one son in law, David Hall Jenkins.
    Sue was a woman of strong Christian faith who loved the Lord. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved and cared for her family deeply. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
    She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 56 years, Clinton Stiles; her son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Lisa Stiles of Hickory; her two daughters, Debbie Brown and Martha Jenkins, both of Robbinsville; her sister, Alice Kephart and her husband, Jim, and her two brothers, Johnny and Marvin Graves, all of Murphy; her six grandchildren, Anthony Brown, Eden Brown, Kristy Orr, Lance Lane, Ricky Stiles and Stephanie Mounts; her three step grandchildren, Afton Hyde, Cassie Patterson and Coty Jenkins. She has 11 great-grandchildren.
    Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Lone Oak Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev.  Darrin Self will officiate.

    Randall Delano Griffith, 71, of Andrews, passed away Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, at his home.
    Mr. Griffith was born June 19, 1945, in Murphy, to the late Noel Griffith and Grace Kathleen Lunsford Griffith.
    Randall was of the Baptist faith, and a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam War.
    In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and working on cars.
    Mr. Griffith had worked at Baker Furniture and Western Forge.
    He was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Clontz.
    Survivors include his wife, Helen Griffith; mother, Grace Kathleen Griffith; children, Dawn (Mitchell) Morgan, Teresa Christiansen, Troy (Peggy) Clontz, Carolyn Botones, Martha Pittman; grandchildren, Brandon, Marissa, Justin, Jason and Jacob, Erin, Jason, Amanda, Justin, Adam, Johnathan and Eric; several great-granchhildren; a brother, Merill Dean Griffith; and niece, Chris.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Cochran Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tony Raxter officiating.     Marcia Meadows Cook, 65, of Blairsville, Ga., passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, at her home, surrounded by her loving family following an extended illness.
    Marcia was born March 3, 1951, in Marietta, Ga., daughter of the late Dorothy Meadows Senter and the late Roy Meadows.
    Marcia loved the church, her family, and especially her two grandchildren. She previously worked at banks in Marietta, Ga., and Murphy, and Parker Drug Store in Murphy before attending nursing school and becoming a registered nurse. She worked at Good Shepard Home Health as a hospice nurse and retired from Union General Hospital with health issues in 2012.
    Marcia also was preceded in death by her stepfather, Paul K. Senter.
    She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Gary A. Cook; three sons,  Jonathan Cook (Tiffany) of Blairsville, Ga., Nathaniel Cook (Liza Anne) of Simpsonville, S.C., and Matthew Cook (Dawn) of Wilmington; and two grandchildren, Mahayla Cook of Blairsville, Ga., and Wilson Cook of Simpsonville, S.C.; a brother, John Meadows (Vicki) of Marietta, Ga.; a sister, Kim Morton (Tom) of Kennesaw, Ga.; stepsister, Starla Watson (Tony) of Marietta, Ga.; stepbrother, Rodger Senter (Gayle) of Clemmons, N.C.; stepbrother, Doug Senter (Ellen) of Columbia, S.C.; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday Jan. 25, at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel in Blairsville with the Rev. George Cline officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.
    Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Mountain View Funeral Home in Blairsville. Flowers are accepted or, if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Regency Hospice in Marcia’s memory.

    Marilynn Louise Hixson Williams, 88, of Brasstown, passed away Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, at Murphy Medical Center Nursing Home.
    She was a native of Lucas County, Ohio, and the daughter of the late John Ryan and Elsie Bacon Hixson.
    She moved from Clearwater, Fla., about eight years ago.
    Marilynn was a homemaker. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Amos Williams; and brothers, Charles Hixson and Karl Hixson.
    She is survived by her daughter, Karen Herbst and husband John of Brasstown; her son, Kenneth Williams and wife Donna of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three brothers, James Hixson of Phoenix, Ariz., John Hixson of Asheville, and Paul Hixson of Hayesville; grandchildren, Jamie Sue, Monica, Josclyn and Keli Ann; and eight great-grandchildren.
    A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

    Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Michael Wynn and Brenda Dillard;  daughter, Dalila Teresa Dillard; daughter, Bobbie Samantha Lynn Wallace; brother, Thomas Taylor; sister, Bobbie Ellen Swartz; grandchildren, Heather Bain, Susan Kennedy, Samantha Brown, Carrie Roberts, Amanda Cochran, Courtney Watters, Shawn Paul Dillard Ralston and Stephen Michael Ralston;  11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
    A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) in honor of June.

    Logan Braatz, 6, went home to God on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, in the Lawrenceville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Ray officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
    Logan is survived by his mom and dad, Angelica Braatz and Chris Rutherford of Atlanta; brother, Isaiah Holloway of Atlanta; maternal grandparents, Reba and Eddie Whitehead of Atlanta; maternal grandfather, Bryant Braatz of Monroe, Ga.; uncle and aunt, Andie and Brittany Brasley of Athens, Ga.; aunt & uncle, Amanda and Jerermey Smith of Monroe, Ga.; great-aunt, Windy Douglas of Grayson, Ga.; uncle, Deandre Williams of Atlanta; aunt, Mary Franklin of North Carolina; cousins,  Jasmine, Brooklyn, Abbie, Savana, Jessi; numerous family and friends.

    Marcia Meadows Cook, 65, of Blairsville, Ga., passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, at her home, surrounded by her loving family following an extended illness.
    Marcia was born March 3, 1951, in Marietta, Ga., daughter of the late Dorothy Meadows Senter and the late Roy Meadows.
    Marcia loved the church, her family, and especially her two grandchildren. She previously worked at banks in Marietta, Ga., and Murphy, and Parker Drug Store in Murphy before attending nursing school and becoming a registered nurse. She worked at Good Shepard Home Health as a hospice nurse and retired from Union General Hospital with health issues in 2012.
    Marcia also was preceded in death by her stepfather, Paul K. Senter.
    She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Gary A. Cook; three sons,  Jonathan Cook (Tiffany) of Blairsville, Ga., Nathaniel Cook (Liza Anne) of Simpsonville, S.C., and Matthew Cook (Dawn) of Wilmington; and two grandchildren, Mahayla Cook of Blairsville, Ga., and Wilson Cook of Simpsonville, S.C.; a brother, John Meadows (Vicki) of Marietta, Ga.; a sister, Kim Morton (Tom) of Kennesaw, Ga.; stepsister, Starla Watson (Tony) of Marietta, Ga.; stepbrother, Rodger Senter (Gayle) of Clemmons, N.C.; stepbrother, Doug Senter (Ellen) of Columbia, S.C.; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday Jan. 25, at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel in Blairsville with the Rev. George Cline officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.
    Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Mountain View Funeral Home in Blairsville.
    Flowers are accepted or, if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Regency Hospice in Marcia’s memory.
    Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville is in charge of arrangements.
