Reginald Bryson

    Reginald Delano Bryson, 76, of Murphy, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2017, at the Clay County Care Center.
    He was born in Carter County, Tenn., but lived most of his life in Cherokee County. He was the son of the late Sibyl and Della Mae Hughes Bryson.
    Reggie had been a self-employed auto mechanic, on the maintenance staff for Cherokee County Schools and retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation as an auto and diesel mechanic. He enjoyed auto racing, carpentry work, and playing his guitar and banjo.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Regina Bryson; and brother, Zane Bryson.
    He is survived by two sisters, Yvonne Dantzler of Kingsland, Ga., and Pam Goldstein of Charleston, N.C. He also is survived by his children, Mike and Danny, both of Murphy, and Reggie and wife Souha Khawam of Salem, Va.; Kathy Sexton and husband Shawn of Cumming, Ga., and Susie Bryson of Sylva; grandchildren, Jessica Handford and husband David, Deidra, Jared, John, Andrew, Gabriel and Rayya; and great-grandchildren, Emmalyn, Annabelle and Amelia.
    Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 22, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Rev. Aud Brown officiated. Burial was in the Whitmore Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dennis Curtis, Dewayne Cole and Phil Evans.

    Don Hogsed, 76, of Hayesville, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2017, at Murphy Medical Center Nursing Home.
    Don was a native of Cherokee County. He was a son of the late P.C. and Mary Williamson Hogsed.
    He was an U.S. Army veteran and a member of Tomotla Baptist Church. Don enjoyed ginseng hunting, gold panning and basketweaving.
    He was preceded in death by his sister, Nell Hogsed; and brothers, R.V., Leonard, Charles and Verner Hogsed.
    Surviving are his daughter, Angie Gardner and husband John of Clyde; son, Mike Hogsed and wife Dawn of Murphy; grandchildren, Garrin Hogsed, Tyler Gardner, Jordan Hogsed and Elizabeth King; and great-grandchildren, Ralston, Hadley, Reagan and Riley.
    Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Rev. Steve West officiated. Burial was in Grape Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Garrin Hogsed, Tyler Gardner, Brian King, Jim Palmer, Wayne Wells and Roy Hogsed. Honorary pallbearer was Mitch Arrowood.
    The family received friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.

    Robert Wallace Boyd Jr., 77, of Blairsville, Ga., passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at his residence.
    He was born in Dalton, Ga., to the late Robert Wallace Boyd Sr. and Mary L. Williams Boyd.
    Robert was owner and operator of Boyd’s Countertops and Cabinets Inc. for more than 20 years until his retirement.
    He was a motorcycle and NASCAR enthusiast. He also enjoyed going fishing. Robert was of the Baptist faith. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ken Boyd; and his sister, Jane Osborne.
    He is survived by his wife of 40 years, M. Ann Boyd; son, David Wallace Boyd of Blairsville, Ga.; daughters, Lynn Ricker and husband Casey of Mystic, Conn., Vicki Watson and husband Kenneth of Murphy, and Terry Donaldson and husband Daniel of Crystal River, Fla.; brothers, Mike Boyd, Frank Boyd and Greg Boyd, all of Dalton, Ga.; three sisters, Diane Fausett of Marietta, Ga., Patricia Bearden and Cindy Smith; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Chaplain Greg Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Memory Gardens in Hiawassee, Ga. Pallbearers will be Frank Boyd, Robert Boyd, Greg Boyd, Mike Boyd, Hayes Ledford and Jimmy Lyte. Honorary pallbearer will be Ken Watson.
    The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.

    Anthony Colombo Veroline, 80, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at his home.
    He was born in Camden, N.J., to the late Joseph and Anna Lanchoney Veroline.
    He was an electrician for Union Hall International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and playing cards.
    He is survied by his wife of 60 years, Helen Strater Veroline; children, Anthony Veroline and his wife, Karen, of New Jersey, Dina Jennings and her husband, David, of Murphy, Troy Veroline and Phillip Veroline, both of New Jersey; grandchildren, Katie Veroline, Anthony Veroline, Paul Wilson, David Jennings and Brianna Veroline.

    Rev. Patt Joseph Miller, 80, of Hayesville, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2017, in a Chattanooga, Tenn., hospital.
    Patt served four years in the U.S. Navy, nine years as a North Carolina highway patrolman and spent the majority of his life farming.
    Patt served as a pastor at two churches and lived a lifetime of ministry. Patt actively enjoyed planting, harvesting  and sharing the fruits of his labor.
    One of his greatest pleasures was cooking food and having people enjoy it around his table. His enthusiastic love for his Savior and for life was an inspiration to many people.
    Patt was eager to work hard and enjoyed playing even harder. Patt was able to do many things well, but he was mainly known for his faithful service to his Savior and generous love for family and friends.
    Patt was the son of the late Charles Russell and Eula Vaughn Reece Miller. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard Elmer and Roger Keith; and sister, Evelyn Goforth.
    Patt was a loving and kind husband to Austella Cabe Miller; and wonderful father to Michael William and wife  Shari of Hanover, Va., and Kevin Richard and wife Rebekah of Warne, and others who needed a good fatherly role model. He was an active, fun-loving grandfather to the lives of his nine grandchildren. Also surviving are his sister, Joyce Ware of Brasstown; and four brothers, Charles Miller of Houston, Texas, Leonard Miller and wife, Irene of Warne, Gene Miller of Jasper, Ga., and Bn Lygh and wife Harriet of Hayesville; and many nieces and nephews.
    A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, with the Rev. Kevin Miller and Michael Miller officiating. A graveside service will be held following the celebration of life at Greenlawn Cemetery in Peachtree. Honorary pallbearers will be Jackie and Johnny Barnes.
    The family will receive friends from 3-3:50 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, prior to the services.

    Grace Hampton, 90, of Murphy, died Monday, July 31, 2017, in Murphy Medical Center.
    She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County. Grace was a homemaker and member of Hanging Dog Baptist Church.
    She was the daughter of the late John Martin and Ethel Birdie Lovingood Ramsey, and wife of the late Rev. Marvin L. Hampton, who died Sept. 4, 1995. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Marlane.
    Surviving are a daughter, Myra H. Rivenbark and husband Van of Simpsonville, S.C.; two sons, Kendall Hampton of Murphy and Rodney Hampton and wife Patricia of Fayetteville, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Bryan Hampton, Marissa Clontz and Perry Clontz.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, with the Revs. Johnny Foster and Aud Brown officiating. The interment will be in Hanging Dog Baptist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dustin and Jay Heeth, Mark Thigpen, Greg Worley, Keith Clay and the Rev. Jimmy Tanner.     Hugh William (Bill) Youngblood Jr. went to be with his Lord the morning of Saturday, July 8, 2017. Born Aug. 21, 1946, in Tampa, Fla., Bill was presently residing in Woodstock, Ga., with his wife, Nadine, the love of his life. At the time of his death, Bill and Nadine were staying at Bill’s favorite place, their home in the beautiful mountains of Murphy.
    Bill’s greatest treasure in this world was his family.  Surviving him are his wife, Nadine Evelyn Youngblood; son, Gene Frazee and wife Gina; four daughters, Denise Savely and husband Wayne, Doreen Buben and husband Ray, Michelle Edwards and Kimberly Turner; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia Turnbull, and her son, Hugh Holton; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws. 
    He was the leader of his family in all ways and his wisdom, guidance and care for each will be greatly missed. Bill had a great love for life. He cherished his family, his friends, good food, sharing laughter, music, books, politics, travel and especially fishing.
    Jesus was the foundation of everything Bill did whether it was his family or his business. His love for Jesus guided his life and directed his steps in all things.
    He was an extraordinary leader and teacher, always willing to help others grow and succeed. He was passionate about being a great financial planner as he helped improve the quality of life for hundreds throughout his career. He served through missions and on many ministry boards. He was devoted to his minister friends.
    He fervently loved our country and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant from the United States Army.
    The relatives and friends of Bill and Nadine are invited to a Celebration of Life at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Reid’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post 96 and DAV Chapter 73 and American Legion Post 532 of Hayesville and VFW Post 6812. 
    The family is requesting donations to Reid’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 4281 Lower Bear Paw Road, Murphy, NC 28906.

    Margaret Mary Smith, 79, of Murphy, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2017, in Murphy.
    Mrs. Smith was born Dec. 9, 1937, in Connecticut to the late Jack Avampato and Margaret Ellis Avampato.
    She was a longtime resident of Lake Worth, Fla.
    A member of St. William Catholic Church of Murphy, Mrs. Smith retired from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Lake Worth, Fla., as a physical education teacher and taught Tai Chi at the Wellness Center in Murphy.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, G. T. Smith, and her parents, Jack and Margaret Avampato.
    Survivors include her daughter, Debra (John) Murnan; sons, Randy (Mishelle) Smith, Glenn (Liza) Smith, Greg (Sara) Smith; brother, John (Jean) Avampato; and seven grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at St. William Catholic Church with Father Alex Ayala officiating. Interment will be in Epworth First Baptist Church Cemetery.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to Logan’s Run Rescue Center.

    William Roy Wells, 62, of Murphy, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, in a Blairsville, Ga., hospital.
    He was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County.
    All of his working life, Roy worked for Wells & West Inc., including construction and property management. His greatest love was being general manager of the Cherokee Hills Golf Course.
    He was passionate about his family, politics, storytelling, music, fishing and Georgia Tech basketball.
    Roy was a member of Murphy First United Methodist Church.
    He was the son of the late William J. “Bill” and Jeanne Stiles Wells.
    Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Susan Thompson Wells; a daughter, Erin Wells McCoy and husband Brett of Murphy; a son, Bill Wells of Raleigh; three sisters, Betty J. Roberson and husband Haskel, Sarah Sisson and Lee McKeon and husband Kenny, all of Murphy; and a granddaughter, Kathryn McCoy.
    The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.
    A private family service will be held at a later date.

    John Lawrence Schell, 81, of Murphy, passed Monday, July 25, 2017, into the presence of our Lord at home, cared for by his wife, Vivian.
    He was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and raised in Tampa, Fla. In his career, he lived in eight states, District of Columbia and five countries. Many of these locations allowed him to enjoy his favorite water sports, sailing, Iron Man competition and marathon running.
    John spent 26 years in the U.S. Marine Corps; two years at the Bank of Hawaii, where he designed the online security system for the first ATMs; 14 years with Lee County, Fla., administration, where he worked for Florida Supreme Court System, designing their Witness Management Program still used today; and 13 years with the U.S. Postal Service, rising to postmaster in Culberson.
    He helped establish the Marine Corps League in Andrews and was a lifetime member.
    His longest residency was 21 years in Murphy, one of his favorite places.
    John was predeceased by his father, Lawrence Schell; mother, Myrtle Lechner; and one brother, Richard Schell.
    He is survived by his wife, Vivian; son, John J. Schell; daughter, Adria Y. Schell; sister, Joann Armstrong; brothers, William and Joseph Schell; mother-in-law, Estelle Wilson; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces and inlaws, most residing in Florida.
    A Celebration of Life Catholic Mass will be held Monday, Aug. 28, at St. William Catholic Church. There will be a meeting of family and friends from 10-11 a.m. and Mass at 11 a.m. After mass, the Marine Corps League will present the military funeral service and a light lunch to follow in the church commons.
