James Guile Sr.

    James Roger Guile Sr., 73, of Andrews, passed away Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Cobb County, Ga.
    He was a native of Naples, N.Y., and the son of the late Leslie Guile and Lillian Sick Guile.
    James was a devout Christian man. He enjoyed woodworking and deer hunting.
    He is survived by his wife, Joan Patterson Guile; one son, James R. Guile Jr. and wife Sheri of Warner Robins, Ga.; two daughters, Heidi Burns and husband Jeffrey of Dunnellon, Fla., and Jacquelyn Kijawski and husband Larry of Warner Robins, Ga.; two stepsons, Gary Patterson and Larry Patterson and wife Sandy; one stepdaughter, Rebekah Patterson; one brother, Thomas L. Guile Sr. of Dunnellon, Fla.; one sister, Rebecca Santiago of Farmington, N.Y.; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathryn Guile.
    Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Rev. L.B. Adams officiated. Burial was in Ranger Baptist Church Cemetery.

    Stephen Barker Hemstreet, 89, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at Murphy Medical Center.
    He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late Marcus and Catherine Hemstreet.
    Stephen was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a marketing representative for U.S. Gypsum O’Brien Homes.
    Stephen enjoyed boating, golfing, afternoon gin martinis, drawing and painting.
    He was a member of Episcopal Church of the Messiah in Murphy.
    He is survived by his wife, Alma Eliza Parsons; two daughters, Pamela Rosenkrans of Chester, Va., and Holly Kaleniecki of Murphy; one sister, Bonnie Bertino of Waterloo, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.
    The family received friends at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at the parish hall of Episcopal Church of the Messiah. The service followed at 11:30 a.m. in Episcopal Church of the Messiah.

Faye Howell

    Faye L. Howell, 88, of Murphy, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, in a Murphy care facility.
    She was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County. Faye was the oldest living member of Little Glade Baptist Church.
    She was the daughter of the late Jesse M. and Eunice Franks Ledford and wife of the late Bill Howell, who died Feb. 16, 1979. She also was preceded in death by two sons, Arnold and Bobby Howell; a son-in-law, Benny Dockery; a grandson, Jeffrey Howell; and two brothers and three sisters.
    Surviving are a daughter, Annette Dockery of Murphy; four granddaughters, Tammy Hunsucker of the home, April Reece of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Cynthia Waldroup and Christy Rayburn, both of Murphy; three grandsons, Mack Dockery and wife Debbie of Murrayville, Ga., and Brian and Kevin Howell, both of Locust Grove, Ga.; 14 great-grandchildren; a special great-great-grandson, Casen Gross; daughter-in-law, Thia Howell of Stockbridge, Ga.; sister-in-law, Eureka Ledford of Murphy; brother-in-law, Kenneth Cole of Gillsville, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.
    A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, in Little Glade Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Palmer officiating. A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Old Martins Creek Cemetery.
    The family received friends 30 minutes prior to the service.

    Oma Mae Ledford Elrod, 95, of Murphy, passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, at her residence.
    She was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County.
    Oma enjoyed gardening, working in her flowers and making quilts, which she lovingly gave away. She was of the Baptist faith.
    Oma loved her entire family but especially her grandchildren.
    She was the daughter of the late James Vener and Venora Lee Beaver Ledford, and wife of the late Thomas David Elrod, who died May 12, 1974. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Joy Brown; three sons, Tom, Kenneth and Dan Elrod; and two sisters and five brothers.
    Surviving are two daughters, Betty Elrod and Wanda Kephart and husband Joe, all of Murphy; two sons, Charles Elrod and wife Shelia of Murphy and Paul Elrod and wife Diane of Holly Springs, Ga.; 15 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, with the Rev. Eddie Trentham officiating. The interment will be in Elrod Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David, Nick, Jamey and Doug Elrod, Randy Brown and Matthew Allen.
    The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.

    Richard Perry Griffin, 83, of Murphy, passed away Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, at Murphy Rehab & Nursing Center.
    Mr. Griffin was born Jan. 1, 1935, in Portland, Maine, to the late Elmer Griffin and Lena Perry Griffin.
    Richard worked as a credit manager for The New York Times, drew political cartoons for the Tuesday Weekly in Ellsworth, Maine, and was a cartoonist up until his passing.
    In his spare time, he enjoyed listening to jazz music and playing golf. He also was a Mason and Shriner.
    Survivors include his loving wife, Linda Griffin; his twin daughters, April Poulin and Melody Wright; his daughter, Sheri Crosson; two step children, Chris Tanner and Jamie Tanner Reece; four grandchildren, Amanda Poulin, Travis Poulin, Courtney Wright and Cristin Wright; four step grandchildren, Josh Reece, Christopher Reece, Andrew Tanner and Audrey Tanner; one great-grandchild and one step great-grandson, Jayden Reece.
    A memorial service will be held at a later date.

    James Elmer Collins, 78, of Murphy, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at his residence.
    He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County. James was the son of the late Elmer and Jean Haney Collins.
    He was a U.S. Army veteran. James worked for Lockheed Martin in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He received recognition for fabricating the silent propellers for the Sea Wolfe U.S. Submarine.
    James was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a MOPAR enthusiast.
    He is survived by his wife, Melba Collins; daughters, Debbie Collins Smith and husband Mickey of Murphy, and Terri Collins Cobb and husband Mike of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; sister, Nola Hemphill of Blairsville, Ga.; five grandchildren, Cameron Smith and wife Nicole of Ball Ground, Ga., Ben Smith of Murphy, and Joshua, Hannah and Daniel Cobb of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Reagan and Paige Smith.
    A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at Mount Liberty Baptist Church. The Rev. Zach Orton officiated.
    The family received friends from 4-6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at Mount Liberty Baptist Church.

Mary Ashley

    Mary Johnson Ashley, 69, of Murphy, passed away Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, at her residence.
    She was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and educator.
    She retired from Cherokee County Schools in 2008 after 35 years of service educating children, promoting Battle of the Books and fighting for teacher’s rights.
    In retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her dear friend, Beth Stiles, from north to Alaska, south to Key West, east to New York City and west to Hawaii. She delighted in the exploits of her grandchildren and was very proud of their accomplishments, from Emilia’s gymnastics’ medals, both girls’ dance recitals, Riley’s swim meet, Josh’s band concerts and so many ball games.
    As a single mother, she was determined her kids wouldn’t be a statistic, and was proud to see them each finish college.
    She was a devoted Christian and served faithfully as a member in more churches than most will ever attend. She was currently an active member at Murphy First Baptist for the last 30 years and devoted numerous hours to the WMU, Shoe Boxes, children’s ministry and the church library.
    She was active in many civic groups including Delta Kappa Gamma and Eastern Star.
    She was the daughter of the late Forest Bernard and Alice Evangeline Shields Johnson. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Alan Johnson.
    Surviving are a daughter, Stephanie Ashley of Hickory; a son, Phillip Ashley and wife LeAnn of Harrisburg; two sisters, Phyllis Bradford of Gainesville, Ga., and Pamela DeDea and husband Steve of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Forest B. Johnson II and wife Elizabeth of Murphy; three grandchildren, Emilia Ashley, and Josh and Riley Ashley; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, in Murphy First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Tanner officiating. The interment was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Colby Stanton, Jeremy Thompson, Matthew Johnson, Josh Ashley, Jacob Bradford and Reid Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Forest Johnson II, Forest Johnson III, Andrew Bradford, Eric Bradford and Blake Stooksbury.
    The family received friends from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, where the body remained until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the
services.

Gordon Amlotte Jr.

    Gordon “Gordie” L. Amlotte Jr., 57, of the Hanging Dog community in Murphy, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018, while at home in his recliner.
    Gordon was born in Ossineke, Mich., and raised in Grayling, Mich.
    At age 17, he joined the U.S. Navy as a submarine diver. Later, he became a trucker, a logger and laborer.
    He moved to Murphy around 1980 to be near his parents, Margaret Amlotte of Murphy and the late Gordon L. Amlotte Sr.
    Gordon never married nor had any children, but he was blessed with family and numerous friends.
    Gordie was well known for his kind, loyal, general, joking and giving nature. He never knew a stranger, and we will all remember him and miss him.
    In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister in Murphy and a younger brother in Georgia. He was blessed with several nieces and nephews.

Maxine Mettier

    Mrs. Maxine “Max” Clara Smith Jones Mettier, 81, of Blairsville, Ga., passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Braselton, Ga., following an extended illness.
    Mrs. Mettier was born on Feb. 11, 1936, in Blairsville, Ga., the daughter of the late Luther Mood Smith and Arra Florence Botts Smith.
    After graduation from Union County High School, Max moved to California, where she lived for over 30 years.  She retired from Marin Water District and moved back to Marietta, Ga., where she worked for several years as an EMT dispatcher. Then she moved back to Blairsville and worked for United Community Bank for many years.
    Max loved being “Grammie” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was well known for her chicken salad, cheese cake and love of games. She was a domino champion.
    Mrs. Mettier was of the Baptist faith.
    Preceding Mrs. Mettier in death are brothers Aster Wayne Smith and Arthur Smith; sisters Edna Sanders, Abby Little, Madeline Mahone and Evelyn Hogsed.
    Surviving Mrs. Mettier are her husband, Henry K. Mettier; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Ann and Ted Riggs of New Bern; grandchildren, Matthew  Bowie and wife Christian, Andy Bowie and wife Michelle, Cliff Mettier; great-grandchildren, Dezi, Evie, Olivia and Willie; numerous nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews along with many other friends and relatives who loved her dearly.
    Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. and the memorial service will follow on Saturday, Jan. 13,   in the Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel, Blairsville, Ga. Special music will be provided by Charlotte Anderson, and the minister will be Buddy Pittman.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Lung Association in memory of Mrs. Mettier.

Wallace Rogers

    On Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, our beloved daddy, Wallace Monroe Rogers of Vengeance Creek Road in Marble, closed his eyes in death and opened them to be with the Lord.
    He was born Dec. 11, 1926, in Cherokee County. He was the son of the late Floyd and Maude Sneed Rogers.
    Wallace was a World War II veteran and served in the Philippines as a military police officer. He retired from Parker & Reichman Farms in Andrews, where he was a truck driver.
    Wallace was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Old Vengeance Creek Baptist Church.
    Mr. Rogers was survived by one daughter, Rita Rogers Rife and husband David of Marble; one son, Phillip Crawford and wife Rosa of Andrews; one brother, Edward J. Rogers and wife Mary Ruth of Marble; one sister Nell Rogers Hembree of Peachtree; four grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintances.
    A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy.  The Rev. Fred Lunsford and Pastor Clark Moss officiated.

    Myrtle D. Stiles, 77, of Murphy, passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, at Murphy Medical Center.
    She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, and the daughter of the late Randle Lee and Pearlene Young Farmer.
    Myrtle was a homemaker. She loved her family and her dog, Molly. She enjoyed her church, Southend Baptist, and singing in the choir.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, J.L. Farmer and Grady Farmer; and one sister, Jacklene Hughes.
    She is survived by her husband, Marvin Harold Stiles; three sons, Randall Stiles and wife Terry, Bill Stiles and wife Janice and Steve Stiles of the home; three daughters, Patricia Golden and husband Warren, Becky Sams and husband Dan and Shiryl Nix and husband Jimmy; two sisters, Alene Laney and husband Buster and Shirley Kephart and husband Alvin; special friend and caregiver, Desiree Henson;  29 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
    Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Rev. Steve Sneed and Pastor Harold Stiles officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Tim Kephart, Michael Sams, James Tague, Gregory Klima, Randall Stiles Jr. and Forrest Stiles. Honorary pallbearers were James and Danny Chastain.

    Annie Mae Mason, 68, of Murphy, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at her residence.
    She was born in Fannin County, Ga., to Junior and Jewell Evelyn Burger Jones.
    Annie was a homemaker. She loved spending time with her family and grandkids.
    She is survived by her husband, Troy Mason; three sons, Tracy, Trevis and Stacy Mason; four brothers, J.C., Charles, Donald and Lee Jones; one sister, Margaret Carswell; grandchildren, Kendall, Trace, Devin, Josh, Meghan, Andrew, Emily, Wesley, Toby and Brooklyn Mason, Charlie Womble, Brandon Hughes and Matthew Hughes; great-grandchildren, Logan Payne, Abigail Payne, Emma Sue Hughes, Kylie Hughes, Ryan Womble, Jesslynn Wood, Dayna Mason, Delyla Mason, Colby Deece, Trinity McEntyre, Makayla McEntyre and Bently Mason.

    Carl “Skinner” Harry Hickey, 68, a resident of Farner, Tenn., passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at his home.
    Carl had a great love for hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He also loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Lorena Hickey.
    He is survived by his loving wife, Cammie Hickey; children, Michael Hickey, Amber Sisley, Caroline Pack, Billy White, Richard White, Wayne White, Samantha Hickey; grandchildren, Emma, Teagen, Caitlin, Peyton, McKenzie, William, Jolee, Austin and Jayden.

    She was born in Cabarrus County to the late “Z.S.” and Lena Mayfield Earwood.
    Betty was a member of Hanging Dog Baptist Church.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Kephart; one sister, Katie Hale; and brothers, Andy, Johnny, Sammy, Charles and Gordon Earwood.
    She is survived by two sons, Eddie Joe Kephart and wife Karen and Bobby Glen Kephart and wife Tracy, all of Murphy; one daughter, Beth Kephart Hall and husband Kenny of Murphy; one brother, Billy Earwood and wife Jeanie; two sisters, Judy Bowlin and Dorothy Johnson and husband Billy Hugh; grandchildren, Jennifer Dickey, Tracy Helton, Jon Hall, Jessica Kephart, Erica Jenkins, Kendra Kephart and Tyler Kephart; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service and burial were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, in the Hanging Dog Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jon Hall, Ryland Dickey, Jeremy Helton, Tyler Kephart, Donald Ray Johnson and Ashton Raxter. Honorary pallbearers were Braxton Jenkins and Karson Williams.

    James T. (Tom) Gentry, 81, of Murphy, passed away Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018.
    He was born in Murphy and spent the majority of his life there.
    He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Judith Davis Gentry; and is survived be his son, James Robert Gentry of Greenville, N.C.
    He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Murphy First Baptist Church.
    He was the son of Don and Vera Gentry, who preceded him in death.
    He attended school in Murphy and graduated in 1954. During high school, he was a very active band member and also was active in sports. During his senior year he was co-captain of the 1953 Bulldogs. He was a Morehead Scholarship finalist and received a scholarship to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
    He was a Realtor and member of the Mountain Lakes Board of Realtors who served as president for three separate terms.
    He was an avid motorcyclest and rode for many years with two of this closest friends, “The Ghost” (Gene Bates) and “Searide” (Sam White). He was known as “Tomcat” to his closest friends.
    He was a lifelong Republican and served a term as county manager of Cherokee County. He also served many years as administrator of the Upper Hiawassee Watershed Development Association, which brought needed dental care and education to northeast Georgia and western North Carolina.
    He was a founding director of Northwestern Bank in Murphy as well as Cherokee Savings & Loan. He also was a director of Murphy First Citizens Bank for many years.
    His civic endeavors included being president of Murphy Lions Club, acting as chairman for the midget/mite football program and Murphy Lions Club swimming pool. He was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 402 for five years. He served as president of the Murphy Jaycees and state vice president of the North Carolina Jaycees.
    He loved the outdoors and was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association.
    Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Murphy. No services are planned.
    Townson-Rose Funeral Home was in charge of cremation.

    Deborah Diane Annis, 52, of Marble, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at her residence.
    Deborah was the daughter of James and Evelyn Annis.
    She was an elementary school teacher. She loved her family and friends, and liked to travel. Deborah also enjoyed the outdoors and just loved life.
    In addition to her parents, she is survived by her sister, Melissa Yonce and husband James; brothers, Jimmy Annis and wife Melinda, and Landon Annis and wife Summer; nieces, Misty, Shay, Kellie, Jadeyn and Savanna; and two nephews, Ryan and Joseph.
    The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Hampton Memorial Church.
    Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Hampton Memorial Church. Pastors Steve Sneed and Derek Tilley officiated.

Gladys Webb

    Gladys Hogan Webb, 84, of Andrews, passed away Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, in an Asheville care facility.
    She was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County. Gladys was a homemaker and member of Andrews First Baptist Church.
    Gladys loved her family dearly and wrote beautiful letters to them, and also wrote poetry.
    She was the daughter of the late Fred and Edith Lee Hogan. She also was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
    Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Simon Eugene Webb; a daughter, Deborah Webb Frye and husband Rick of Asheville; a son, William Benjamin Webb and wife Debbie of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a sister, Faye Brown of Andrews; two grandchildren, Kyle Webb and wife Marissa, and Megan Webb; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, in Andrews First Baptist Church with Dr. Calvin Bobo officiating. The interment will be in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Coy and Lyle Brown, Danny Anderson, Perry Hogan, Greg Pullium and Jim Rogers.
    The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Andrews First Baptist Church prior to the services.
