Dwight Roy Dolliver, 74, of Murphy, died at home on Sunday morning, July 29, 2018.
He is survived by his wife Judy Dolliver; brother, Don Dolliver; and children, Kim Carter, Jeff Dolliver and Misty Gray.
A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at Nottely River Valley Vineyards, 1150 Old Culberson Road, Murphy.
He fought a long battle with cancer and is remembered in the community for his home-brewed spirits and handcrafted weaponry.
James Gibson

James “Jim” Richard Gibson, 87, of Blue Ridge, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018, at his residence.
He was a native of Murphy, but had lived in Blue Ridge since 1989.
Jim had driven a taxi, worked in the sawmill and as a carpenter. Jim was a hard worker throughout his life, and he didn’t give up until the end.
Jim enjoyed being outdoors and helping others. He was a sweet, kind and caring man to everyone.
Jim had attended Little Glade Baptist Church.
He was the son of the late Leach Richard and Mae McMillan Gibson. He also was preceded in death by four brothers, Vader, Clint “Rat,” Wade and Alfred Gibson.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Margaret Lucille Gibson; a daughter, Loretta Floyd and husband Doug of Blue Ridge; a son, Elvis Gibson of Blue Ridge; a brother, Mack Gibson of Murphy; a half brother, Garr Hood of Pensacola, Fla.; five grandchildren, Jacob Dewayne Gibson, Jessica Bailey, Stephanie Floyd, Wesley Gibson and Brianna Gibson; three great-grandchildren, Promise Joy Gibson, and Katie and Gracie Bailey; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, with good friend, the Rev. Eric Davenport, officiating. The interment will be at Mount Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from noon-1:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, prior to the services.

Ethel Yearick Fisher, 88, of Murphy, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2018, at her home.
Ethel was a native of Centre County, Pa. She was a daughter of the late George and Ruby Frazier Yearick.
Ethel was a member of Murphy First United Methodist Church and Grape Creek Homemakers. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crafting.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, June Walizer and Sarabelle Yearick; brother, Homer Yearick; grandson, Daniel McCullough; and daughter-in-law, Carole Fisher.
Ethel is survived by her husband of 70 years, Harold Fisher; son, Tom Fisher; daughters, Brenda Ross and husband Jim, Catharine Brown and husband Terry and Lori McCullough and husband Robert; brother, George Yearick; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Rev. Ken Yearick officiated.

Hal Wayne Newton Sr.

Hal Wayne Newton Sr., 75, of Marble and formerly of Gastonia, passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Hal was born Nov. 1, 1942, in Murphy to the late C.B. Newton and Birdell Brooks Newton.
A member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, he was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ronald Newton; and a nephew, Jason D.
Newton.
Hal worked as a superintendent for Homelite/John Deere for many years. He enjoyed golfing and farming in his spare time.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Betty Revis Newton; son, Hal Newton Jr.; daughter, Glenda and (Matthew) Payseur; sons, Jon Newton, Mark Newton and Luke Newton; two sisters, Peggy King and Eva Lowe; three brothers, L.C. and (Sandra) Newton, Richard and (Sue) Newton and Dillard and (Debbie) Newton; three grandchildren, Trish Conner, Brittany Weaver and Brandy Weaver; and one great-grandchild, Bentley Conner.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Cochran Funeral Home of Murphy with the Rev. Harold Stiles officiating.
Interment will follow in Peachtree Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mark Newton, Jon Newton, Luke Newton, Isaac Stafford, Adam Powell and Matthew Payseur. Honorary pallbearers will include Richard Newton and Timmy Hopkins.

Cecil Hovey

Cecil “Chuck” Carlton Hovey, 89, of Murphy, passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2018, in Hayesville.
He was a native of Bay County, Fla., and the son of the late Sam and Gina Hovey.
He was a retired Navy lieutenant commander. Chuck served in three wars – World War II, Korean and Vietnam.
Chuck was a member of Shepherd of the Mountains Church.
He enjoyed fishing, growing vegetables, tennis and was a fabulous cook.
Chuck also was a master chess player.
He is survived by his wife, Susie Hovey.
No services are planned at this time.

Ethel Crisp

Ethel Crisp, 95, of Murphy, passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, at her home.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, and the daughter of the late Lloyd and Ida Patterson Martin.
Ethel was a homemaker. She loved spending time with her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Ethel enjoyed working in her vegetable garden and preserving the fruits of her labor.
She also enjoyed her flower garden. She grew anything from regular flowers to roses, and often would dig and grow wild wood flowers. She loved her cows.
Ethel was a member of New Martins Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Eugene Crisp, and second husband, Glen William Crisp; two grandchildren, Roddie Coffey and Brandus Crisp; two great-grandchildren, Jacqueline Crisp and Desiree Mull; one brother, George Lex Martin; seven sisters, Annie Carringer, Helen Cearley, Lora Bell Crisp, Iva Lou McCullough, Arvil Shelton, Otis Crowe and Arlene Hardman; and son-in-law, Kenneth Coffey.
She is survived by two sons, Alvin Crisp and wife Donna of Douglasville, Ga., and Ben Crisp and wife Jackie of Hayesville; four daughters, Charlotte Ball of Murphy, Virginia Coffey of Marble, Thelma Jean Mull and her significant other Ray Ledford of Hayesville, and Brenda Everett and husband Mac of Blairsville, Ga.; three brothers, Dewy Martin, J.D. Martin and Howard Martin; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at New Martins Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Aud Brown and Hoyt Brown officiated. Tammy Womack and Ben Crisp also were speakers. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Stanley Crisp, Doug Crisp, Travis Crisp, Shon Crisp, Lucas Mull, Lonnie Randall and Justin Ward.
The family received friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at New Martins Creek Baptist Church.

Jean Phillips, 78, of Taylors Creek Road, Andrews, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family following an extended illness.
Mrs. Phillips was born in Clay County, the daughter of the late Verlin and Hazel Henson Hall.
Jean was a member of Valley River Baptist Church, where she was the secretary and treasurer for 35 years. She loved to cook and enjoyed spending time with her many loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack Phillips, of 57 years in 2016.
Surviving Mrs. Phillips are two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Cherry Phillips of Andrews, and Gary and Delynn Phillips of Adairsville, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Allen Kirby of Andrews; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Pat Hall Piedmont, S.C.; John and Debbie Hall of Manning, S.C.; Jerry and Linda Hall of Sylva; five grandchildren, Curtis and Misty Phillips, Chris and Lisa Adams, Brittany and Daniel Smith, Mashala Phillips and Dylan Phillips; seven step grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Valley River Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until time for the service. Close friends and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Irene Jordan Wilson Vaughan-Lloyd, 92, of Lexington, peacefully passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born March 26, 1926, in Murphy to the late Jake Jordan and Julia Teague Jordan.
After attending Western Carolina University, Irene worked as a administrative assistant for the Workshop of Davidson, where she was on the board of directors.
Irene was also on the board of directors for the ARC, where she served as secretary and president, charter member of the first Davidson Day Reporting, member of the VFW Auxiliary No. 3074 and American Legion Auxiliary Post 8. She also volunteered with the Red Cross and was precinct supervisor of the North Ward voting precinct.
Irene was a member of North Lexington Baptist Church, and in her spare time she loved reading, listening to music and dancing.
She was a wonderful person and loving mother with patience, understanding and great strength through faith. She was truly remarkable and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her husband and father of her children, Roy Allen Wilson; later husband, William Carey Vaughan-Lloyd; sons, Ronnie and Larry Wilson; sister, Hazel Lindsey; brothers, John and Arthur Jordan; and infant brothers, James and Paul Jordan.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Sherry Hondros and Lee Wilson, both of Lexington; grandchildren, Brandy Hondros (Tim Stewart) of Lexington, Mark Hondros of Wilmington, Chris Wilson (Deb) of Lexington, David Wilson of Lexington, Erin De Los Reyes (Paul) of Wake Forest, Benjamin Wilson of Wilmington, and Jake Wilson (Tori) of Lexington; great-grandchildren, Luke and Waverly Hondros, Patrick Wilson; Wilson and Max De Los Reyes and Jac Wilson; numerous nieces and nephews; extended family including Bill Hondros, Jim Rangel, Sheila Wilson and Buddy; and wonderful friends and close neighbors.

Jennifer Lynn Dennis, 45, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, Aug.7, 2018, at her home in Murphy.
She is survived by her husband, Greg Dennis of Murphy; father, Steve Clark of Dekalb, Ill.; mother, Patti Tumas of Fountain Inn, S.C.; along with three brothers, Jesse and Shane Clark and Joseph Tumas, and many cousins, aunts and uncles.

Frances Naomi Tolley, 80, of Murphy, passed away Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018, at Erlanger Murphy Medical Center.
Frances was born June 12, 1938, in Cherokee County, to the late Romulus Ray and Leona Ladd Ray.
A member of the Church of Christ faith, she was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene Tolley; two brothers, Kenneth and Ronald Ray; and one sister, Ann Addis.
Frances was a talented artist, and she used many different mediums in her works. She was also an avid writer having written several articles that were published in the Cherokee Scout.
Survivors include one sister, Elma Piercy; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Cochran Funeral Home of Murphy with Minister Tommy Hayes officiating. Interment followed in Vengeance Creek Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Johnny Luther, Aaron Barnett, Ryan Farmer, Tyler Thompson, Gordon Farmer and James Hartness. Honorary pallbearers were Kevin Ray and Lindford Palmer Jr.
The family received friends from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Cochran Funeral Home.
