    Joyce Crisp Ward, 64, of Murphy, passed away Monday, Sept. 17, 2018, at her home.
    Joyce was born Nov. 17, 1953, in Bryson City to the late Raymond Crisp and Virgie Hendrix Crisp.
    A member of Little Brasstown Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale Ward; daughter, Stacy Ward; and brothers, Ray Crisp and Ron Crisp.
    Joyce worked as a child caregiver and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
    Survivors include her son, Tony (Christina) Ward;  daughter, Stephanie (Travis) Cable; son, Adam (Wendy) Ward; brother, Alan Crisp; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at Cochran Funeral Home in Murphy with the Rev. Aud Brown officiating. Interment followed in Greenlawn Cemetery.
    The family received friends from noon-2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at Cochran Funeral Home.
    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Little Brasstown Baptist Church, 6120 Harshaw Road, Brasstown, NC 28902.

Lloyd Mashburn

    Lloyd C. Mashburn, 78, of Mulkey Gap Road in Blairsville, Ga., passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018, following an extended illness.
    Mr. Mashburn was born Sept. 13, 1940, in Culberson,  the son of the late Frank Mashburn and Mariel Patterson Mashburn.
    Lloyd loved tinkering on things and could repair just about anything. He always had a great sense of humor and loved making everyone laugh. He loved his pets, especially his dog, Didget.
    He was a loving companion, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather.
    Lloyd was of the Baptist faith.
    Surviving Mr. Mashburn are seven children: John and Trina Mashburn of Powder Springs, Ga., Frank and Julie Mashburn of Blairsville, Boyd and Missy Mashburn of Marietta, Ga., Janice Kennedy of Blairsville, Bruce Mashburn of Louisiana, and Alene Carter of Culberson, Sandy Stoltzs of Florida; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Wanda Mashburn of Crestview, Fla.; two sisters, Jessie Raper of Blairsville, and Lois Morgan of London, Ky.; 27 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends also survive.
    A memorial service will be held at a later date and be announced.
    In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life or the Union County Humane Society Mountain Shelter in Lloyd’s memory.

Willard Floyd

    Willard Charles Floyd, 92, of Mauney Circle in Blairsville, Ga., passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, at his home following an extended illness.
    Mr. Floyd was born Jan. 24, 1926 in Murphy, the son of the late Thomas Andrew Floyd and Irie Hedrick Floyd.
    He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II, was in the occupation of Japan and served in combat in the Philippines.
    He was a 60-plus year member of Dooley Masonic Lodge No. 367 F&AM.
    Willard was a license contractor/builder in Murphy for many years.
    He was a loving father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an avid Braves fan, and next to God and his family they were probably next in line.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Jimmye Mauney Floyd; parents; and two brothers, Andrew and Richard Floyd.
    Mr. Floyd was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
    Surviving Mr. Floyd are one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Linda Floyd of Blairsville; two sisters, Verna Puett of Blairsville, and Joanne Miriani of Sterling Heights, Mich.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, T.A. and Dot Floyd of Blairsville, and Kenneth Floyd of Blairsville; four grandchildren, Derek and Emily Floyd, Dakota and Lauren Floyd, Ana and Jason Hall, Ryan and Jordan Hadas; two great-grandchildren, Elijah Hall and Ryleigh Floyd;  several nieces, nephews; and many other relatives and friends also survive.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, from the Mountain View Chapel in Blairsville with the Revs. Tommy Jenkins and David Feathers officiating. The following gentleman served as pallbearers, Derek Floyd, Dakota Floyd, Jason Hall, James Dye, Brian Davis and Eric Davis. Interment followed in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, where he will rest next to his beloved wife, Jimmye. The North Georgia Honor Guard conducted military honors.
    The family will met with friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at the funeral home.

    Brian Lee Brown, 52, of Cumming, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018.
    He was predeceased by his mother, Anna Brown.
    Brian is survived by his father, Robert Brown; his wife, Rebecca Brown; children, Emily Brown, John Brown (Alexis), Anna Brown and Ian Brown; sisters, Rebecca Boyda (Thomas) and Bonny List; brother, Robert Brown; and one grandson, Kent Yater.
    Visitation was held from 1-2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at McDonald and Son Funeral Home, Cumming, with a memorial service at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home.

Russell Colombo

    Russell Duane Colombo, 70, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018, at his home in Murphy from surgery.
    Rus was born Feb. 26, 1948, in San Francisco, Calif., where he grew up.
    He was a Vietnam veteran, who served on a naval aircraft carrier during the war.
    Later he moved to a small town in northern California, where he raised his two children, Nicholas and Heather, and worked in the automotive industry. Rus was a dedicated dad, never missing a school function or sporting event.
    He moved to Murphy in 2016 with his loving wife, Laurel, after visiting north Georgia and North Carolina. He loved the lush greenery and welcoming folks of the South.
    Rus was a dedicated walker and known by all his neighbors for his daily 8-mile walks. He also was an active gardener and especially loved growing tomatoes in the summer and turning them into spaghetti sauce for the rest the year. Next to reading, Rus’ favorite pastime was driving his corvette stingray with his special license plate “Decadent.”
    He was an avid animal lover and rescued many shelter pets. He will be missed terribly by his five cats, two dogs
and all of the street dogs he treated on his daily walks.
    Remembrances may be sent to Valley River Humane Society in Murphy.
    Survivors include his loving wife, Laurel; children, Nicholas and Heather; brother, Edward; and one special granddaughter, Charlotte. Also, dogs Micki and Rooney and cats Maggie, Murphy, Abbey, Smokey and Frazier.
    Arrangements are entrusted to Cochran Funeral Home, Murphy.

Jack Coleman

    Jack Kimsey Coleman, 77, of Old Fort, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, at his home.  
    A native of Murphy, he was born June 4, 1941, to the late Charles and Mary Coleman.
    Jack graduated from Murphy High School in 1959 and received a bachelor of science degree from North Carolina State University, School of Forestry, in Raleigh in 1965. He retired in 1998.
    Jack was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 672 of Robbinsville and a 37-year member of First Baptist Church of Benton and member of Gideon’s International.  
    He was also preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Coleman McCurry, who died Dec. 28, 2016.   
    He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sue Webster Coleman; and twin sisters, Marilyn (Jerry) Hartness and Mildred (Richard) Pullium, both of Murphy. He also is survived by several nephews and nieces.   
    Funeral services were at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at First Baptist Church of Benton with Dr. Robbie Speights officiating. Interment was at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Murphy.  
    The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at the church prior to the service.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church Activity Building, P.O. Box 326, Benton, TN 37307.

Roger Berrong

    Roger James Berrong, 82, passed away Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, at his home.
    He was born March 16, 1936, in Clay County to the late Jesse Bon and Jessie Scroggs Berrong.
    He attended Hayesville School and had to quit in the eighth grade to work. When he was 17, he went to Chicago, Ill. to work for 11 years before coming back to Clay County.
    He owned and operated the Sinclair Station in Murphy for 10 years. During this time, he built and raced his own car No. 3 at Tri-County Raceway for three years. Red Schuyler always called him Hard Luck Berrong in his articles in the Cherokee Scout.
    After selling the station, he went to work for Goodyear in Murphy as the service manager for four years. He then went to work for Burch Motors as service manager for seven years. Roger then worked for the N.C. Department of Transportation as a mechanic for 19 years until his retirement in 1999.
    He raised gardens, worked in his shop and loved to sit on his porch.
    Roger was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir and testifying his love for his Lord and Savoir.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary Evelyn Crisp Berrong; and two brothers, Terry and Ralph Berrong.
    He is survived by two daughters, Vicki Queen and husband Robbie and Debbie Mills and husband Keith, all of Hayesville; one son, Brad Berrong and Laurie Terry of Murphy; one sister, Carolyn Rogers of Hayesville; three brothers, Don Berrong of Hayesville, George Berrong of Powder Springs, Ga., and Johnny Berrong of Bellview; grandchildren, Blake Brooks of Hayesville, Tara Robinson of Hayesville, Justin Berrong of Hayesville, Jordan Berrong of Marble, McKenzie Terry of Charlotte and Cody Terry of Murphy; and seven great-grandchildren.
    A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at Townson Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Hayesville. The Rev. Aud Brown will officiate.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made to New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Carter Cove Road,   Hayesville, or to Gideons International, Murphy.

    Patricia “Patty” Ann Little, 62, of Little Lane in Murphy, formerly of Marietta, Ga., passed away peacefully Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, in Murphy Rehabilitation & Nursing, following an extended illness.
    Ms. Little was born April 17, 1956, in Long Beach, Calif., the daughter of the late Lake James Little and JoAnn Thompson Little.
    Patty was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served as a medic, DJ and police officer. She was a true American and loved her country, and was proud of her service in the military.
    Patty made her home in Murphy for the past 25 years. She was a journalist and editor of the Cherokee Scout for 15 years and a certified nursing assistant in later years by trade.
    Patty was a loving mother, sister and aunt.
    Surviving Ms. Little are one son, Jason Blake Little of Murphy; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Barbara Little of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
    No services are planned at this time.

Ron Pylant

    Kenneth Ronald Pylant, 69, of Murphy, passed away Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018, at his residence.
    He was born July 24, 1949, in Mountain City, Tenn.
    Ron was raised in the north central area of Indiana and lived in Fort Wayne, Ind., before moving to Murphy in 2002.
    He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Vietnam as a combat medic.
    He graduated from Indiana University in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and economics. He was a stockbroker for 23 years, retiring in 2000 as a registered principle, and functioning market manager, analyst and position trader.
    Ron was a former member of Friendship Baptist Church and something of a student of the works of George W. Truett.
    He was the son of the late Andrew Allen and Loretta Walker Pylant.
    Surviving are a brother, Steven Pylant and wife Kay; and a nephew, Matthew Pylant, all of Leesburg, Ind.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, with the Rev. Dick Stillwell officiating. The interment will be in Friendship Baptist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ed Crooks, Ron Epple, Dennis Wood, David Burrell, C.B. McKinnon and Chris Dickey.
    The family will receive friends from 1-1:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, prior to the services.

Thomas Kline

    Thomas W. Kline, 76, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018.
    Tom was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and later retired from Northwest Airlines after 39 years.
    He is survived by his loving wife, Robin Kline; sister, Marybeth Schipke; brother, Robert Kline; two stepsons, Steven and Lloyd Hazelbaker; stepdaughter, Sharon Risner; and six grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Charles Kline, and brother, Donald Kline.
    Tom was a member and treasurer of Messiah Chapter of The Brotherhood of St. Andrew, and a groundskeeper at Episcopal Church of the Messiah.
    Tom was a devoted fan of the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins.
    He was a good friend who would always lend a hand to anyone.
    A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Church of the Messiah.

    Lucille Drake McClintock passed away Monday, Sept. 24, at age 98 in a nursing home in West Palm Beach, Fla.
    She was the daughter of the late Maude and Carl Drake of Nantahala, and wife of the late Clarence “Mac” McClintock, who passed away in 1997.
    She is survived by two sons, Thomas (Dorothy) Silver of Windham, Ohio, and Billy (Janet) Silver of Murphy; one daughter, Betty (Brian) Foster of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Kimberly McClintock of Fort Myers, Fla., and Terry (Steve) Fillow of Andrews.
    She was a proud grandmother of more than 15 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
    She never met a stranger, and her home was always open to family and friends. She was deeply loved and will be missed by many.
    A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13. Dave Silver will conduct the service. An inurnment will be held at a later date at the Aquone Cemetery in Nantahala.
    The family will receive friends from noon-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

    Thomas “Tom” Schlarb, 85, passed away Friday, Sept. 14, after a battle with lymphoma.
    Born in Stow, Ohio, he had lived in Nantahala for the last 30 years.
    He leaves his wife, Ginger;  eight children, 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
    Burial took place Saturday, Sept. 15, in the family cemetery with only family in attendance.

    Richard Kenneth Drabek gently slipped away on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, at age 80.
    Rich enjoyed the Yankees, dancing, computer games, card games, get-togethers and traveling. His love story with his wife was a lasting memory for him.
    His proudest times were with his family and his 21 years he served in the United States Navy, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. Additionally, he served 21 years in the U.S. Post Office.
    Rich is survived by Eileen, his loving wife of 36 years; one sister;  five children, Raymond, Steven, Tina, Deena and Gregory; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
    The family will have a celebration of life gathering for family and friends from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Konehete Park, 699 Conahetta St., Murphy, Pavilion No. 3 next to the baseball field.
    In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Four Seasons Hospice of Murphy.

    Guain H. Dockery, 95, of Marble, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018, at her residence.
    She was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County. Guain retired from Coats America, working in the textile industry for 18 years.
    She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Marble.
    She was the daughter of the late William Harrison and Rosie Lee Garren Hancock, and wife of the late Rev. Harvey T. Dockery, who died Jan. 7, 2002. She also was preceded in death by a son, Harrison Dockery; three sisters, Wilma Lovingood, Katherine Dockery and Edna Carroll; and three brothers, Clint, Tommy and Charles Hancock.
    Surviving are a daughter, Nadine Lance and husband Jim of Marble; two sons, Alfred Dockery and wife Wanda and Danny Dockery and wife Carolyn, all of Murphy; a daughter-in-law, Joy Dockery of Marble; a sister, Helen Wyke of Marble; nine grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, in Oak Grove Baptist Church in Marble with the Revs. Ricky Lance, Darrell Dockery and Eddis Dockery officiating. The interment will be in Moss Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jeff Lance, Bryan Dockery, Hunter Lance, Austin Dockery, Zack Dockery and Benji Roberts. Mark Farmer, Joey Lewis and all other grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
    The family will receive friends from noon-1:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Marble prior to the services.

    Pat Taylor, 83, of Asheville and formerly of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018, at her residence.
    She was a native of Summit County, Ohio, but lived in Murphy for three years before moving to Asheville in 1976. She was owner of Fairview Tax Service.
    She was the daughter of the late Wanda J. Kelley, and wife of the late Halsey J. Taylor, who died Nov. 8, 2002. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Pilleggi; and a son, Ronnie Pilleggi.
    Surviving are three daughters, Laura Lee Brady and husband Jesse of Asheville, Ramona Taylor and husband Ray Green of Marion and Cindy Chastain and husband Bruce of Murphy; a son, Halsey Jack Taylor Jr. and wife Becky of Fairview; a sister, Janet Bassett of Murphy; 13 grandchildren, Nick, Johnny, Jennifer, Amanda, Michelle, Sharon, Candace, David, Justin, Hayley, Brittany, Devon and Steven; and 14 great-grandchildren, Madison, Joey, Jackson, Hayden, Hunter, Hannah, Abby, Alex, Sammy, Joshua, Christopher, Mason, Lilah and Alexandria.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, with Pastor Darrell McClaren officiating. The interment will be in Old Martins Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steven, David,and Justin Taylor, Joe Kime, Justin Sigmon and Mike Pressley.

    Janice Rae Baumgartner, 86, of Murphy, passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, at her home in the Peachtree community.
    Mrs. Baumgartner was born Aug. 23, 1932, in Los Angeles, Calif., to the late Hoke Smith Norville and Mabel Gwendolyn Harrah Norville. Moving from Fallbrook, Calif., Janice and her husband, Nicholas, made Murphy their home for the past 16 years.
    Her main goal in life was taking care of her family. She is remembered by her family as a loving, supportive and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
    Survivors include her husband, Nicholas S. Baumgartner; daughter, Susan Lynn Workman; son, Steven Nicholas Baumgartner; sister, Carol Ann Jones; seven grandchildren, Scott, Brian, Cameron, Brandon, Layne, Gwen and Shannon; six plus one great-grandchildren, Iliana, Alexander, Lyra, Lars, Daphne, Alex and an expected great-granddaughter in the near future.
    A private burial was held Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Murphy.
    Arrangements were entrusted to Cochran Funeral Home of Murphy.

    Nicholas Stephen Baumgartner, 88, of Murphy, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018, at his home in the Peachtree community.
    Nicholas Baumgartner was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Punta Gorda, Fla., to the late Harry Edward Baumgartner and Myrna Moore Miller Baumgartner.
    Nick and his wife, Janice, moved from Fallbrook, Calif., to make Murphy their home for the past 16 years.
    He was a U.S. Navy pilot and veteran, a Fire Captain for the Los Angeles City Fire Department for 23 years and retired as Chief of the Aptos Fire Department in California after 10 years of service.
    In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Janice Baumgartner, on Oct. 1, 2018.
    Survivors include his daughter, Susan Lynn Workman; his son, Steve Baumgartner; his brother, Robert E. Hinkel; seven grandchildren, Scott, Brian, Cameron, Brandon, Layne, Gwen and Shannon; six plus one great-grandchildren, Iliana, Alexander, Lyra, Lars, Daphne, Alex and an expected great-granddaughter in the near future.
     A private burial was held Friday, Oct. 5, in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Murphy.
    Arrangements were entrusted to Cochran Funeral Home of Murphy.
