Helen Holland

    Helen G. Holland, 83, of Murphy passed away Sunday, May 12, 2019 in the Murphy hospital.
    She was a native of Cherokee County. Helen lived in many places such as Atlanta, New York, Dallas, and Los Angeles due to her career in retail working with Sak’s 5th Avenue and Neiman Marcus. She returned to Murphy following her retirement around 2002 and then worked at Brasstown Valley Resort.
    Helen was a member of the Murphy First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed oil painting and was a talented artist. Helen was very proud of her great-great-nieces and nephews.
    She was the daughter of the late William G. and Jessie Jane Sneed Holland. Helen was the last surviving child of 11 children.
    Helen is survived by many loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
    A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, in the Murphy First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Wil Posey and Aud Brown officiating. The inurnment will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Wednesday at the Murphy First United Methodist Church prior to the services.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Helen G. Holland to the Murphy First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 86, Murphy, NC 28906.

Steve Raper

    Steve Douglas Raper, 67, of the Hiwassee Dam community, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2019 in an Atlanta, Ga., hospital following an extended illness.
    Steve had worked for Tennessee Chemical Company in the mines for many years.  He later worked for IPI Industries as a pipefitter and welder. Steve was raised on the family farm and was on the tractor from a young age. He was proud of his farming heritage. Steve enjoyed fishing and Hiwassee Dam basketball. Steve was a member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
    He was the son of the late Jack Clifton and Gillie Mae Quinn Raper. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara Ann Allen and Willa Lou Hedrick and two brothers, Clem and George Edward Raper.
    Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Juanita Raper of Hiwassee Dam; two daughters, Julie Ann Raper Boring and husband, Tim of Hiwassee Dam and Stefanie Tanner and husband, Jason of Blairsville, Ga.,; four sisters, Nell Britt of Hiwassee Dam, Juanita Stiles of Woodstock, Ga., Sue Boring and husband, Pat of Hiwassee Dam, and Carol Picklesimer of Murphy; a brother, Paul Quinn Raper of Doraville, Ga.,; four grandchildren, Amber McDonald, Chelsea Foster, Dakota Sneed, and Seth Tanner; two great-grandchildren, Dax Foster and Deacon McDonald. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and his dog and sidekick, Sam.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with the Revs. Jerry Morrow and Josh Ledford officiating.  
    The interment will be in Old Reid’s Chapel Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be R.L. Howard, Matt Stiles, Michael Allen, Marshall Boring, Dakota Sneed, and Seth Tanner.
    Honorary pallbearers will be Adam, Bob, and Bill Crisp, Ed and Phil Stiles, Leroy and James Hedrick, Eugene Morrow, Chris Britt, Keith Allen, Tony Graham, Israel Campbell, Cliff Raper, Jeff Hamby, and Joe Helton.
    The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 13, at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.

Donald Meltz

   Donald Leon Meltz, age 83 of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at Erlanger Medical Center.
     He was born in Atlantic City, NJ to the late Sam and Anne Leon Meltz. Donald retired from the U.S. Air Force as a recruiter. He was also a security guard at Bear Paw for 15 years. Donald was a member of the St. William Catholic Church.
     In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, William O’Brien and one step-sister, Christine Brown.
     He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Meltz of 49 years; sons, Lawrence, Timothy and Patrick O’Brien and Daniel and Stephen Meltz; two daughters, Cheryl Ketelhut and Elisabeth Graham; 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
    A funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 17, at the St. William Catholic Church. Father Alex Ayala officiated.
    Military honors were conducted after the service by the American Legion Post #96 Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville, NC and the Marine Corp League Marble.
     The family received friends from 6-8 p.m.,Thursday, May 16, at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home.

Donald Stroud

    Donald Ray “Don” Stroud, age 70, of Harrison, Tenn., died May 11, 2019 at his home.  A native of Hayesville. he was the son of the late Charlie and Nettie Stroud.
    Don was a devout Christian and a member of Maple Grove Baptist Church.  He loved to teach Sunday school, sing, work out, ride bikes and fish.
    In 1995, Don retired from Washington, DC as an Army SGM.  He also served in Vietnam in his early career. He was dedicated to serving his country.
    He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Margie Foster Stroud, a beloved son, Scott Stroud (Kimberly), and two grandchildren, Jacob and Kathryn Stroud, all of Toccoa, Ga., one sister, Linda Cheeks (Pete) of Hayesville, and numerous nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at Maple Grove Baptist Church, 9525 Birchwood Pike, Harrison with the Revs. Ronnie Dotson and Andy Bell officiating.  Deacons of Maple Grove Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
    The family will receive friends Saturday, May 18 from 3-5 p.m. at the Maple Grove Baptist Church prior to the services. 
    A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at Truett Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Foster officiating.

Ida Timpson

    Ida Vivian Timpson, age 79 of Brasstown, passed away Monday, May 13, 2019 at Erlanger Medical Center.
    She was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County, and the daughter of the late Edd and Mattie Jackson Arrant. Ida retired from Tri-County Community College as a director for the Adult Basic Education. She was a member of Hickory Stand United Methodist Church.
    In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles, Frank, Wilbert and Malcolm Arrant and sisters, Edith Deaver and Ruth Butler.
     She is survived by her husband, Tim Timpson; two sons, Bert and Ed Timpson; one sister, Joanne Hart and husband Chuck; and two granddaughters, Brittany and Tiffany Timpson.
     Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Monday, May 20, at the Hickory Stand United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bryan Wilson officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Mikie and Matthew Crawford, Steve Heberger and John Herbert.
     The family received friends from 2-4 p.m. Monday, May 20, at the Hickory Stand United Methodist Church.

Beatrice Van Nostrand

    Beatrice Babcock Van Nostrand, 97, of Murphy, passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, after a period of declining health.
     She was born in Glen Cove, NY, to the late Carl John and Anna Sjodahl Hagstrom. She was preceded in death by husbands, Eugene Babcock and George Van Nostrand, son, James (Jim) Babcock and daughter, Linda McGrady.
     Beatrice loved taking care of her family and was blessed to do so for several generations. She enjoyed working with her flowers which grew beautifully under her loving care. She also worked as a Ward Secretary at both District Memorial Hospital and Murphy Medical Center.
     Surviving are a son, Eugene (Chuck) Babcock and wife Barbara, 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
     The family received friends from 3-4:30 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home with  private graveside services following at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
    The Rev. Rondall Brown officiated.
    Pallbearers were Eugene Babcock, Van Babcock, Robert (Mickey) McGrady, Jason McGrady, Shawn McGrady and Keith Whitener.

Jimmy 'Puddin' Hardin

    Mr. Jimmy ‘Puddin’ Dean Hardin age 60 of State Highway 325 Blairsville, Ga. passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Thursday May 16, 2019 at his home following an extended illness.
    Mr. Hardin was born on Sept. 8, 1958 in Andrews, the son of the late Harold Hardin and the late Maxine Day Hardin.
    Puddin had lived in Union County, Ga., for the past 40 years. He loved fishing, camping, hunting and spending time with his family and friends. He was a loving husband, brother and uncle.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and also three brothers, Ray, Clay and Mike Hardin and a sister, Missy Hardin. Mr. Hardin was of the Baptist faith.
    Surviving Mr. Hardin are his loving wife and best friend of 38 years, Sandra Thornton Hardin of Blairsville,  one sister, Barbara “Bob” Hardin of Andrews, sister-in-law, Cathy Rogers of Virginia, two brothers-in-law, Eddie and Sheila Thornton, Don and Mary Thornton, nieces, Amanda Gentle, Shiloah Hardin, Brittany Thornton, Nichole Williams, Kristy Lowe, Shana Kuykendall, Shanowa Kuykendall, nephews, John Anderson, Jason Anderson, A.J. Thornton, many other relatives and friends also survive.
    Funeral services were held at 6 p.m. on Sunday May 19, from the Mountain View chapel the Rev. Jeff Deaver officiated.
    Flowers are accepted or if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to Extreme Christian Outdoors 76 Shoe Factory Road Blairsville, Ga., 30512 in Puddin’s memory. The family met with friends rom 3:30-6:00 pm at the funeral home on Sunday, May 19.

    Shirley Yonce, 80, of Murphy, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2019, at her residence.
    She was born in Clay County, W.Va., and is the daughter of the late Arnett Butcher and Hazel Moore Sigmon.
    Shirley was a U.S. Air Force veteran. She retired from MGM Brakes.
    Shirley enjoyed her rose garden, drinking coffee on her porch and watching hummingbirds. She also loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known as Nannie aka “Nan-Nan.”
    Shirley was a member of Upper Peachtree Baptist Church.
    She is survived by her husband, Harold Yonce; two sons, Bobby Yonce and James Yonce and wife Melissa; two daughters, Lisa Henson and husband Chris and Jill Kernea and husband Larry of Murphy; one sister, Edna Statts of Lakeland, Fla.; five grandchildren, Danielle Williams, Kendall Faircloth, Kailey Bailey, Robert Yonce and Lucas Yonce; three great-grandchildren, Aayden Williams, Connor Williams and Maddox Bailey.
    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 27, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Revs. Scott Cole and Derrick Tilley will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Thristen Bailey, Michael Kernea, Ronnie Chastain, Cory Killian, Timmy Williams and Matthew Lovingood. Honorary pallbearers will be Bruce Yonce, Kenneth Panel and Alex Parker.

Carl Meroney

    Carl Porter Meroney of Columbus, passed away Friday evening, May 17, 2019, at his home.
    Born in Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Felix Porter Meroney and Irene Twiggs Meroney.
    Following graduation from Murphy High School, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. After his service, he attended UNC Chapel Hill and graduated UNC School of Pharmacy.
    In 1960, Carl and his wife, Rebecca, purchased Columbus Pharmacy and operated the pharmacy for more than 35 years. They quickly became active in the community, which they served for many years.
    Carl was a founder of the Booster’s Club at the high school and supported many local youth organizations. He was a founding member of the Columbus United Methodist Church and an avid Tar Heel fan. He was a very loving and devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rebecca Wallace Meroney, who passed away in 1995; three sisters, Margaret M. Warner, Betty M. Haviland and Nancy M. Moore.
    Surviving are two daughters, Kelly M. Terceira (Fred) of Williamston, and Margaret M. Jefferson (Jimmy) of Apex; one son, Bart Meroney (Jane) of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren, Evan Terceira, Grace T. Jones (Matt), Cameron Jefferson, Caroline Rebecca Jefferson, Sam Meroney and Rebecca Meroney. Also surviving are four nieces and two nephews.
    The family received friends prior to the service from 2-2:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, in the McFarland Funeral chapel. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, in the McFarland Funeral chapel with the Rev. Laurie Knoespel officiating.
    Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, with military honors conducted by the Polk County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.

    Steve Jason Rose, 41, of Murphy, passed away Monday, May 20, 2019. He was born June 21, 1977.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve Rose and Brenda Helton Smith.
    He is survived by his children, Tayler Rose of Andrews and Leeya Rose of Murphy; and aunts, uncles and lifelong friends.
    A memorial service to celebrate the life of Steve Jason Rose will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the Household of Faith in Murphy.

    Gladys Hager Morgan, 90, of Andrews, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at her residence.
    She was a native of Bessemer City. Gladys worked for Orthopedic Hospital of Gastonia, where she cared for children battling polio and other various disabilities. She later moved to Andrews in 1967 with her husband and children.
    She was a member of Valleytown Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir.
    Gladys was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and dedicated homemaker.
    She was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Ferrie Leona Froneberger Hager. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert Lee Morgan, who died Nov. 23, 2003; four sisters, Eva Thompson, Katherine Bridges, Beth Harmon and Merle McKinnon; and five brothers, Clyde, Floyd, Lloyd, Paul and Mack Hager.
    Surviving are her daughter, Claudette Morgan of Andrews; two sons, Jerry Morgan and wife Debbie, and Alan Morgan and wife Brenda, all of Andrews; four grandchildren, William Morgan and wife Allie, Rebecca Morgan, Zachary Morgan and Wesley Morgan; and many nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 31, in Valleytown Baptist Church with the Revs. Eric Byrd and Marlon Blaylock officiating. The interment will be in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wesley, William, Zachary, George and Mitchell Morgan, and Keith Lingerfelt.
    The family will receive friends from 12-1:45 p.m. Friday, May 31, at Valleytown Baptist Church prior to the services.

Kenneth Paul Deese

    Kenneth Paul Deese, of Crossville, Tenn., born in Miami, Fla., June 2, 1962, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2019.
    He was a disabled veteran of the U.S. Army. He was loved so much by his family and friends, a quiet, gentle man.
    Survivors are his mother, Judith Firley of Crossville, Tenn.; father, Kenneth Earl Deese of Murphy; his brother, Thomas E. Deese of Crossville; stepfather, James Firley of Crossville; grandmother, Marie Norton of Cortland, N.Y.; stepbrothers, Scott Firley of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, Sean Firley of Boca Raton, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
    He will sorely be missed.

    Pauline “Polly” Josephine Pack Farmer, 90, of Marble, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2019, in a Murphy care facility.
    She was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County.
    Polly was a loving mama, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many. She was a caregiver to many of her family members and “Granny” to many other children of the community throughout the years.
    She was of the Baptist faith.
    She was the daughter of the late John Harley and Miza Elvira Ledford Pack, and wife of the late Robert Lee Farmer, who died April 25, 1978. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Gene and Lonnie Farmer; four sisters, Joy Hicks, Dorothy Dockery, Mildred Pack and Irene Pack; and four brothers, Cecil, Edward, Junior and Dennis Pack.
    Left to carry her legacy are children and their spouses, Linda and Tommy Curtis of Beech Island, S.C., Brenda and Don Goff of North Augusta, S.C., Paul and Shelley Farmer of Murphy, Brian and Debbie Farmer of Marble, and Mark and Tammy Farmer of Murphy; three siblings, Ralph Pack of Youngstown, Ohio, Clarence Pack of Andrews, and Kenny Pack of Ranlo, N.C.; and many grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 1, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, with the Revs. Blake Ritz and Randall Moss officiating. The interment will be in Maltby Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dusty Farmer, Justin and Austin Haffly, Dustin Phillips, Eric Goff and Cruz Ledford. Honorary pallbearers will be Clayton and Dewayne Trantham, and William Phillips.
    The family will receive friends from 1-2:45 p.m. Saturday at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, prior to the services.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Pauline “Polly” Josephine Pack Farmer to Gideons International, P.O. Box 164, Murphy, NC 28906.

Beatrice Van Nostrand

    Beatrice Babcock Van Nostrand, 97, of Murphy, passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, after a period of declining health.
     She was born in Glen Cove, NY, to the late Carl John and Anna Sjodahl Hagstrom. She was preceded in death by husbands, Eugene Babcock and George Van Nostrand, son, James (Jim) Babcock and daughter, Linda McGrady.
     Beatrice loved taking care of her family and was blessed to do so for several generations. She enjoyed working with her flowers which grew beautifully under her loving care. She also worked as a Ward Secretary at both District Memorial Hospital and Murphy Medical Center.
     Surviving are a son, Eugene (Chuck) Babcock and wife Barbara, 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
     The family received friends from 3-4:30 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home with  private graveside services following at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
    The Rev. Rondall Brown officiated.
    Pallbearers were Eugene Babcock, Van Babcock, Robert (Mickey) McGrady, Jason McGrady, Shawn McGrady and Keith Whitener.

    James Wesley Truett, 81, of Andrews, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019, in Clay County Care Center.
    He was a native of Cherokee County, and the son of the late Aston Dillard and Ethel Stiles Truett.
    James had worked for Magnavox and Baker Furniture as a sander and finishing furniture.
    He loved hunting and fishing. James enjoyed gardening and sitting on the porch.
    He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Stewart Truett; two daughters, Shirley Hardin and Linda Burris, both of Andrews; one brother, Richard Truett; three sisters, Judy Huskins, Janice Ford and Dorothy Wilson.
    Funeral services were held at 2  p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews. Burial was in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers were Joe Moses, Jarrett Moses, Clint Cable, David Brockwell, Johnny McClain and Eugene Cable. Honorary pallbearer was Johnny Nichols.
    The family received friends from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.

    Steve Jason Rose, 41, of Murphy, passed away Monday, May 20, 2019. He was born June 21, 1977.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve Rose and Brenda Helton Smith.
    He is survived by his children, Tayler Rose of Andrews and Leeya Rose of Murphy; and aunts, uncles and lifelong friends.
    A memorial service to celebrate the life of Steve Jason Rose was held at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the Household of Faith in Murphy.
    The family received friends for visitation from 3 p.m. until the hour of the service.

    Gladys Hager Morgan, 90, of Andrews, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at her residence.
    She was a native of Bessemer City. Gladys worked for Orthopedic Hospital of Gastonia, where she cared for children battling polio and other various disabilities. She later moved to Andrews in 1967 with her husband and children.
    She was a member of Valleytown Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir.
    Gladys was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and dedicated homemaker.
    She was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Ferrie Leona Froneberger Hager. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert Lee Morgan, who died Nov. 23, 2003; four sisters, Eva Thompson, Katherine Bridges, Beth Harmon and Merle McKinnon; and five brothers, Clyde, Floyd, Lloyd, Paul and Mack Hager.
    Surviving are her daughter, Claudette Morgan of Andrews; two sons, Jerry Morgan and wife Debbie, and Alan Morgan and wife Brenda, all of Andrews; four grandchildren, William Morgan and wife Allie, Rebecca Morgan, Zachary Morgan and Wesley Morgan; and many nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 31, in Valleytown Baptist Church with the Revs. Eric Byrd and Marlon Blaylock officiating. The interment was in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wesley, William, Zachary, George and Mitchell Morgan, and Keith Lingerfelt.
    The family received friends from noon-1:45 p.m. Friday, May 31, at Valleytown Baptist Church prior to the services.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Gladys Hager Morgan to Gideons International, P.O. Box 164, Murphy, NC 28906 or Valleytown Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 640, Andrews, NC 28901.
