    Louie “The Kitchen Knife Man” Esposito, Decker’s Flea Market, Murphy, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 22, 2019, after many years of fighting his health battles. 
    He is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Frances Esposito; daughter, Susan Ruby; son-in-law, Ken Ruby; granddaughter, Samantha Ruby, and her fiance, Steve Sardone; along with many friends he had met along the way. 
    There will be a gathering to celebrate Louie’s life and his love of the mountains at 3 p.m. Friday, July 5, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home, 138 Peachtree St., Murphy, NC 28906.

Dr. Julius "Buck" Hill III

    Dr. Julius Napoleon “Buck” Hill III, 78, of Clarkesville, Ga., passed away Monday, July 1, 2019.
    Born in Murphy on May 1, 1941, he was a son of the late Julius Napoleon Hill Jr. and Virginia Gilbert Hill.
    Dr. Hill was a United States Navy veteran who proudly served his country as a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps during the Vietnam War.
    He was an honor graduate of Western Carolina,  where he earned his Bachelor of science degree in biology and chemistry, and later earned his doctorate of medicine from Emory University.
    Dr. Hill was an Eagle Scout, and a member of the Georgia Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Medical Association.
    He was also an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville.
    Survivors include his former wife, friend and companion, Pamela H. Hill of Charlotte; his sons and daughters-in-law, Julius N. Hill IV and Alexandra Hill of Geneva, Switzerland; Dr. David Hill and Tara Hill of Charlotte; brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank G. Hill and Jan Hill of Barnard, S.D.; Robert B. Hill and Luann Hill of Atlanta, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law, Sarah H. d’Empaire and Al d’Empaire of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Carolyn Hill, Georgia Hill, Alex Hill, Luke Hill, Connor Hill and Audrey Hill; and several other relatives and friends.
    A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 6, from First Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville with the Rev. Jasper Keith officiating.

    Oscar Terrell “Stoney” Stone, 92, of Murphy, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 26, 2019.
    He was born Dec. 17, 1926, in Lakeland, Fla., to the late Walter R. and Evelen Adel Allred.
    A member of First Baptist Church of Murphy, Mr. Stone was an accomplished man. He was gifted at welding and woodworking. He also had a career in hydraulic engineering where he attained several patents for various inventions.
    Oscar also served in the United States Navy during World War II. His primary station was Guam, but he was also stationed aboard several vessels.
    Mr. Stone will be remembered by all who knew him, but especially missed by his children, Brenda Stone, Walter Stone and James Stone. Also sharing in his legacy are many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
    No services are planned at this time.

Jerry Robinson

    Jerry A. Robinson, 75, of Hayesville, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2019, in a Clay County care facility.
    He was born and raised on the Harshaw Farm in Murphy, but lived most of his life in Hayesville.
    Jerry was a Vietnam veteran, who served in the United States Navy from 1963-67 on the USS Oriskany.
    He was a dedicated member of Chatuge Assembly of God, where he served as choir director and gladly volunteered to the upkeep of the building and grounds.
    Jerry had worked as a deputy for Clay County Sheriff’s department, and he also loved gardening.
    He was the son of Lemma Hedrick of Gastonia, and the husband of the late Judith Elizabeth Patterson Robinson, who died Feb. 11, 1987. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Judy Stiles Robinson; and two brothers, Eddie and Charles Robinson.
    Surviving are a daughter, Amy Lynn Robinson Kirby and husband Steven of Hiawassee, Ga.; a son, Scotty Robinson of Hayesville; a sister, Sheila Porch of Gastonia; two brothers, Glen and Aggie Hedrick, both of Gastonia; and three grandchildren, Dagen Robinson, Danice Robinson and Cale Kirby.
    A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 7, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, with the Rev. Aline Mosteller officiating. Inurnment will be in Bethel Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Hayesville VFW Post 6812 (Allison Bristol) and American Legion Post 96 and Murphy DAV Chapter 73.
    The family will receive friends from 1-1:50 p.m. Sunday, July 7, at Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, prior to the services.

    Vernon Glyn Luckey, 77, of Brasstown, passed away Friday, July 5, 2019, at his residence.
    He was born in Fort Myers, Fla., to the late James and Lela Stewart Luckey.
    Glyn was a U.S. Army veteran. He was an electrician and a member of Little Brasstown Baptist Church.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Luckey.
    He is survived by two sons, Danny Luckey, and Scott Luckey and Janet Braswell; two daughters, Tammy Patrick and husband Michael, and Rene Branom and husband David; one brother, Gary Luckey and wife Betty; grandchildren, Jonathan Branom, Dakota, Chloe and Jasmine Luckey, Bethani and Joshua Patrick; two great-granddaughters, Aiyla and Ashley Branom.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Little Brasstown Baptist Church. The Rev. Aud Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites being conducted by American Legion Post 96 Murphy, American Legion Post 532 Hayesville, VFW Post 6812, Hayesville, and the Marine Corps League, Marble. Pallbearers will be Robert Caldwell, David Branom, Danny and Scott Luckey, Jonathan Branom, Kenny Hall and Dale Fulbright.
    The family will receive friends from noon-2 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Little Brasstown Baptist Church.

    Doris Elaine Magruder, 76, of Mineral Bluff, Ga., passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019, at Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital.
    She was born in Cherokee County to the late William and Lelia Brown Raper.
    Doris was a bookkeeper. She loved to garden and take care of her flowers. Doris also loved interior decorating.
    She is survived by her husband, Michael Magruder; one son, Troy Williams; one daughter, Mina Ryan; one brother, Joe Rafier; two sisters, Barbara Porteus and Darlene Balm; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held at noon p.m. Friday, July 12, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Rev. Keith Mashburn will officiate.

    Lamont (Monty) Johnson, 62, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2019, following an extended battle with cancer.
    Monty was a native of Warren, Mich., born in Detroit.
    He was a Vietnam veteran having proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. Monty was a U. S. Merchant Marine Officer and for more than 25 years, worked on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers as well as the inter-coastal waterways as a tugboat captain. He held a 1600-ton ocean going license but preferred the inland waterways for their scenic beauty.
    Prior to deciding upon his career on the waterways, Monty sampled various careers that involved traveling, truck driving, limo driving and car transport. Detroit was in his blood. He was also a master carpenter, but kept this to himself so he did not get recruited by friends and neighbors.
    Survivors include his wife, friend and companion of 30 years, Melody Ann Bond-Johnson of Murphy; his mother, Reba Henry, and brother, Kim Johnson, both of Las Vegas. He is also leaving behind his four-legged buddies – Rita, Ruby, Munchkin, Spray and Tuks.
    He was preceded in death by his father, Wilmont Johnson of Michigan; his first wife, Donna Chupa, and his younger brother, Duane Johnson; both of Detroit.
    Monty lived an amazing life, enjoying every opportunity and his adventures to the fullest. He never met anyone who remained a stranger for long with his big smile, hearty laugh and generous heart. Heaven has a new captain, keeping St. Peter busy laughing and supervising those who will listen at the Pearly Gates.  
    A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date for two locations: Murphy and Sarasota, Fla.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Lamont Johnson to his favorite local animal charity: Valley River Humane Society, P.O. Box 658, Murphy, NC 28906.

    Travis Gene McGrady, 41, of Murphy, passed away Friday, July 12, 2019, at his residence.
    He was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County, and the son of the late Robert and Linda McGrady.
    He is survived by his companion of 13 years, Athena Cook; one son, Robert Helton; one stepson; four daughters; three brothers, Mickey, Jason and Shawn McGrady; one sister, Robin Whitener; and many beloved family members and friends.

    Joyce Allen, 87, of Murphy, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2019, in a Murphy care facility.
    She was a native of Lexington, Ky., where she worked for Community Bank for 29 years before moving to Florida. She then worked at Bank of America for 14 years before retiring to Murphy in 1995.
    Joyce was a dedicated animal lover, who supported local animal rescue organizations and also rescued many animals herself. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed cooking.
    She was the daughter of the late George Lyman and Evelyn Harper Alcorn, and wife of the late Howard Ulma Allen, who died July 31, 2001.
    Surviving are a brother, Gehrig A. Alcorn and wife Robyn of Colorado; and several special nieces and nephews.
    No services are planned at this time.

Dewey Moss

    Dewey L. Moss, 78, of Marble, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2019, in a Chattanooga, Tenn., hospital.
    He was a native of Marble and proudly served in the United States Navy.
    Dewey worked as a welder and spent nearly 20 years working in the Washington, D.C., area in tunnel construction. He also lived in various other places throughout his life.
    He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 0085 in Arlington, Va.
    Dewey enjoyed collecting antiques and was an avid flea marketer. He also enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, and loved spending time with his family and grandkids.
    He was the son of the late Fred Lee and Pauline Pendergrass Moss. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Moss.
    Surviving are three daughters, Lisa Moss Hedden and husband Jonathan of Andrews, Cindie Hahn and husband Bob of Florida, and Jennifer Moss of West Virginia; a son, Steven Moss and wife Lisa of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Jean Hawke and husband Robert of Durango, Mexico, and Debbie Hogan and husband Johnny of Marble; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and many nieces.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews, with the Rev. Patrick O’Dell officiating.
    The interment will be in Moss Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Murphy American Legion Post 96, Hayesville VFW Post 6812, and Hayesville American Legion Post 532. Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Moss, Knox Chapman, Lynn, Johnny and Jean Pendergrass, and Gerald Hedden. Honorary pallbearers will be Landan and Tanner Hedden, Jamil Madrid and Drew Hahn.
    The family will receive friends from noon-1:45 p.m. Saturday at Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews, prior to the services.

Darryl Raper

    Darryl Keith Raper, 57, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2019, at his home in Sevierville, Tenn.
    He was terminally ill with osteomyelitis.
    Darryl grew up in Murphy and moved to Port Orange, Fla., to follow his business goals.
    He was preceded in death by his father, Billy Raper; paternal grandparents, Martin T. and Dora Lou Kilpatrick Raper; and maternal grandparents, Frank Jackson and Vyrtle Williamson Hamby.
    He is survived by his mother, Jeanette Raper of Sevierville, Tenn.; aunts, Joyce Allen of Murphy and Brenda Hamby of Grayson, Ga.; several cousins, Jonathan Allen, Sherry Graves, Alan Hamby, Larry Hamby
and Cassandra Morrow, along with many cousins of the Raper family.
    Darryl was an avid model car builder, attending many shows each year and always bringing home at least one first-place trophy. The shows and his models were shown in many magazines each year.
    Hundreds of his models can be seen on Photo Bucket.

Stella Stiles

Oct. 16, 1927-July 20, 2019
    Stella Mae Burgess Stiles of Peachtree passed away Saturday, July 20, 2019, at her home surrounded by her family.
    She was the daughter of the late Winslow and Dovie Burgess and a native of Cherokee County.
    Stella was preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, Charles Arvil Stiles, who passed away May 5, 2007; brothers, Weldon Burgess and Arnold Burgess; and sister, Ruth Burgess Lankford.
    Stella worked hard starting as a young child and instilled hard work to all of her family as a necessity to life. She worked at Peachtree Products, where she retired only to continue hard work homemaking and always making sure the family was loved, taken care of and most importantly fed.
    Stella was an avid member of South End Baptist Church until she was unable to go. She loved attending church, singing in the choir with her buddy, Trevor Grant, and preparing meals for homecoming dinner with an all-time favorite banana pudding.
    After a long life of hard work and dedication, she leaves behind two sons, Pastor Harold C. Stiles and wife Brenda of Marble, and Jearold Stiles and wife Sally of Murphy; two daughters, Carol Hale and husband William of Chapel Hill, Tenn., and Brenda Mathis and husband Richard of Peachtree; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren, which she loved each and every one of them the same. Also surviving are three sisters and one brother.
    For the past year, Stella was taken care at home by her family with special care from Linda Gentles, Kathy Leitner and Sheila Jones. The family cannot express how thankful they are to these special people and her granddaughter, Tammy Powell, and staff of Personal Touch Assisted Living.
    Stella leaves behind a lifelong legacy and will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Revs. R.L. Martin and Ronald Patterson officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Arron, Adam, Jimmy Joe, Kevin, Mason and John. Honorary pallbearers were Joe, Brian, Jeremy, Brian, James, David, Stevie and Paul.
    The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday, July 22, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.

    James Daniel Ogden, 80, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2019.
    “Danny” was a long time resident of Lutz, Fla., then retired to Murphy, where he resided since 2003.
    He was a sheet metal journeyman by trade for 35 years, a master auto mechanic and also a former member of the U.S. Coast Guard.
    He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marilyn Ogden; daughter Lorie Shepherd and husband Darren of North Carolina; son, Lon Ogden and wife Betty of Florida; grandchildren, Dakota Gabrielle Shepherd, Genesis Villorente and husband Kleizer, Denise Ogden, and Zachary Ogden.
    A Celebration of Life will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Shepard of the Mountains Church.

Dewey Moss

    Dewey L. Moss, 78, of Marble, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2019, in a Chattanooga, Tenn., hospital.
    He was a native of Marble and proudly served in the United States Navy.
    Dewey worked as a welder and spent nearly 20 years working in the Washington, D.C., area in tunnel construction. He also lived in various other places throughout his life.
    He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 0085 in Arlington, Va.
    Dewey enjoyed collecting antiques and was an avid flea marketer. He also enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, and loved spending time with his family and grandkids.
    He was the son of the late Fred Lee and Pauline Pendergrass Moss. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Moss.
    Surviving are three daughters, Lisa Moss Hedden and husband Jonathan of Andrews, Cindie Hahn and husband Bob of Florida, and Jennifer Moss of West Virginia; a son, Steven Moss and wife Lisa of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Jean Hawke and husband Robert of Durango, Mexico, and Debbie Hogan and husband Johnny of Marble; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and many nieces.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews, with the Rev. Patrick O’Dell officiating.
    The interment was in Moss Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Murphy American Legion Post 96, Hayesville VFW Post 6812, and Hayesville American Legion Post 532. Pallbearers were Jeffrey Moss, Knox Chapman, Lynn, Johnny and Jean Pendergrass, and Gerald Hedden. Honorary pallbearers were Landan and Tanner Hedden, Jamil Madrid and Drew Hahn.
    The family received friends from noon-1:45 p.m. Saturday at Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews, prior to the services.
    The family requests memorials be made in memory of Dewey L. Moss to American Legion Post 96, P.O. Box 712, Murphy, NC 28906.  
    Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews, was in charge of all arrangements.

Dexter Payne

    Dexter Payne, 47, of Murphy, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2019, at Mission Hospital.
    Dexter was the son of Junior and Joy Payne of Murphy. He was a logger and member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
    He was preceded in death by his nephew, D.J. Payne.
    In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Pamela Payne; son, Justice McKay; daughter, Aerian Payne; brother, Doyle Payne and wife Tara; nephew, Evan Payne; and great-nephews, Danner Payne and Jarrett Sneed.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Revs. Jonathan Smith and Charles Cheatham officiated. Pallbearers were Kevin Murphy, Ray Hamby, Josh Barnett, Doug Prince, Evan Payne, Eric Davis and Mitchell Prince. Honorary pallbearers were Thurman Hamby, James Leonard, Timmy Boring, Stub Reid, Tyler Taylor and Shannon Roescher. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
    The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 19, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.

Bonnie Luther

    Bonnie Lou Luther, 92, of Andrews, passed away Thursday, July18, 2019, at her residence surrounded by her loving family after several years of declining health.
    Bonnie grew up in the Fires Creek Community of Clay County. She was the daughter of the late Taylor and Mae Brendle.
    In 1946, she married Giles Luther of Andrews and had made her home there ever since.
    Over the years, she worked at Berkshire Knitting Mills and Jack’s Five and Dime. She helped keep the family farm running by always keeping the work hands well fed.
    Her greatest success, however, came at raising and caring for her family.
    Bonnie was a gifted painter, quilt maker, basket weaver, gardener and very talented cook.
    She was a long time member of Valley River Baptist Church, and a strong and devout Christian devoted to her Bible.
    In addition to her parents, Bonnie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Giles Luther; and sons, Corbert Luther and Hardy Luther; a granddaughter, Sonia Gregory; and a brother and two sisters.
    Bonnie is survived by a daughter, Deborah Young and husband James, and daughters-in-law, Shelia Luther and Marilyn Luther, all of Andrews; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and many other loving family members.
    Funeral services were held Sunday, July 21, at Valley River Baptist Church.
