
Alan S. Peters, 74, of Murphy, died Friday, July 1, 2016, in an Atlanta, Ga., hospital.
He was a native of Bridgeport, Conn., and lived in Sandusky, Ohio and Macon, Ga., before moving to Cherokee County in 2001.
Alan taught English in his early years and then worked for Combined Insurance for 30 years. While in Macon, Ga., he taught physically impaired children.
Alan was president and board member of The Sharing Center and a member of Shepherd of the Mountains Church.
He was the son of the late Robert F.R. and Mary Caris Peters. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Peters and Greg Peters.
Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Kittie Cox Peters; a son, Arlan P. Peters and wife Allison Moy of Durham; a stepdaughter, Kelly Grant Philbrick and husband Bill of Macon, Ga.; two stepsons, Timothy O’Hara Grant and wife Erika of Jackson, Ga., and Thomas Carey Grant and wife Kay of Macon, Ga.; a brother, Robert F.R. Peters Jr. and wife Ginny of Alexandria, Va.; a sister-in-law, Kathy Peters of Eugene, Ore.; five step grandchildren and one step great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 7, in Shepherd of the Mountains Church with the Rev. Al Beck officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:30-1:50 p.m. Thursday, July 7, at Shepherd of the Mountains Church prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests friends to bring food items to be placed around the altar in memory of Alan S. Peters for the Cherokee County Sharing Center at United Methodist Church of Murphy. Donations may also be made to either the Development Fund at Shepherd of the Mountains Church, P.O.
