Roy Almond, 80, of Murphy, passed away Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017, at his residence.
He was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County.
Roy had served in the U.S. Army, where he had received many medals as a sharpshooter.
He had worked for the Murphy Police Department and later Clifton Precision, where he retired. Throughout his life, Roy worked as a cattle farmer for both himself and others.
He enjoyed hunting and camping with his family.
Roy was a member of Old Fashioned Baptist Church.
He was the son of the late William Oley and Della Burch
Almond. He also was preceded in death by a son, Nathaniel James Parrish; three sisters, Bonnie Mullnax, Juanita Cook and Helen Moody; four brothers, Bill, Johnny, Frank and Ralph Almond; and a stepdaughter, Crystal Johnson.
Surviving are his wife, Charlotte Farar Almond; a daughter, Selina Hope Jones and husband Matt of Murphy; two stepdaughters, Tammy Martin of Winston Salem and Jacquline Haney of Burlington; a stepson, Carl High of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Cody and Caleb Allen, Justin Parrish and Erin Scurry; four step-grandchildren, Erica Reaves, Kyle Gaddy, Ashleigh Haney and Taylor Haney; two great-grandsons; and a special son-in-law, Daniel Allen.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, at Old Fashioned Baptist Church with the Revs. Hoyt Brown and Jeff Graves
officiating. Interment was in Maggie Chapel Cemetery with military gravesite rites conducted by American Legion Post 532, Murphy DAV Chapter 73 and American Legion Post 96. Pallbearers were David Hughes, Clint Cook, Arvel Cook, Bobby May, Steve Johnson and Dallas Crowder.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, where the body remained until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.
Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, was in charge of all arrangements.
