Judy Ellison, 74, of Lawrenceville, Ga., and formerly of Murphy, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2016, following a brave battle against pancreatic cancer.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend to many.
She was known for her wonderful cooking, sewing and gardening. Family and friends enjoyed her delicious potato salad, chicken and dumplings, and banana pudding. She loved to make sauerkraut, jams and salsa from fresh fruit and veggies.
She made more than 75 Memory Bears for others from their loved one’s clothing.
She was a member of Little Glade Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Ellison; her parents, Margaret and Johnny Cantrell of Brasstown, and Robert Clyde Fisher of Silver Springs, Nev.; brother, Bob Fisher of Colfax, Calif.; sister, Tammie Davis of Sparks, Nev.; and former son-in-law, Tony Reece of Lawrenceville, Ga.
She is survived by her “other” mother, Elsie Fisher of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter, April Reece; daughter-in-law, Robbin Jarvis of Lawrenceville, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, Mack and Debbie Dockery of Murrayville, Ga., and Mike and Sheila Dockery of Murphy; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Veronica and David Sherrod of Birmingham, Ala.; stepsons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Hope Ellison of Murphy, and Doug and April Ellison of Murphy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward and Sheila Cantrell of Hayesville, Melvin and Kathy Cantrell of Brasstown, Darrold and Terri Fisher of Santa Rosa, Calif.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Vic Payne of Brasstown, Kathy and Donald Bridges of Sacramento, Calif.; a special uncle who was more like a brother, Virgil McKinley Johnson of Berlin, N.J.; 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friend and caregiver, Barbara Jarvis.
A memorial service was held Saturday, July 23, at Little Brasstown Baptist Church. Dallas Crowder officiated, and Robbie Ellison gave the eulogy. Music was provided by Diana Russell and granddaughters Alesha Orton and Ashley Ellison.

Fannie Stalcup Smart, 96, of Hayesville, died Monday, July 25, 2016, in a Gastonia hospital.
She was a native of Cherokee County, but Fannie lived in Clay County most of her life. She worked for many years as a seamstress for Carolina Dress.
Fannie was a member of Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
Fannie was noted for her cooking and famous for her sweet potato souffle, dried apple fried pies and apple snack cake.
She was the daughter of the late Alexander Richardson and Ada Haney Stalcup, and wife of the late George W. Smart, who died Sept. 11, 1952. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Ira, Alwayne, Juanita and Bonnie; and six brothers, Arby, Glenn, Horace, Frank, Lake and Charles.
Surviving are a daughter, Judy Giles and husband Dan of Charlotte; a son, Charles Smart and wife Janie of Leasburg; three grandchildren, Wendi Byas and husband Karl, and George and Isaac Smart; and three great-grandchildren, Kelly and Owen Byas, and Autumn Smart.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 29, in Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jackie Sellers officiating. The interment will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be George, Isaac and Kenny Smart, Ronnie Clayton, John Stalcup and Billy Garrett.
The family will receive friends from noon-1:45 p.m. Friday, July 29, at Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church prior to the services.

Joann Kephart Matheson, 73, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2016, in Buncombe County.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, and daughter of the late Raymond Lewis and Charlsie Lee Graves Kephart.
Joann retired from the RBC Centura Bank after 39 years of service. She also had worked at Ingles part time for 11 years. She was a member of Grape Creek Baptist Church.
Joann enjoyed working outside, and loved shopping and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Jimmy Matheson.
She is survived by her son, Kenny Matheson of Murphy; her daughter, Terri Keating of Murphy; her brother, Kim (Darby) Kephart and wife Anna of Murphy, and their son, Adam Satterfield and his children, Carter, Parker, Karrington and Paxton Satterfield of Brookhaven, Miss.; grandchildren, Joshua Matheson, Caine Matheson, Zachary Matheson, Lakota Keating and Joseph Helton, and step-grandson, Kendal Keating; one great-grandson, Lane Isaac Matheson; and was excitedly anticipating the arrival of her new great-grandson, Ramsey Floyd Matheson.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 29, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in the Peachtree Community. The Rev. Steve West officiated. Pallbearers were Caine Matheson, Zachary Matheson, Joshua Matheson, Joseph Helton, Adam Satterfield and Ricky Helton. Helen Moore Lowery, 77, born Sept. 2, 1939, in Cleveland, Ohio, passed away at home on Tuesday, July 26, 2016.
She will be interred at Bellview Community Cemetery near her home, where she loved the mountain peace and beauty.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years Marvin Lowery; one daughter, Michelle Lowery; one granddaughter, Jennifer Lowery Lucier; and one great-granddaughter, Zoe Lucier; grandson-in-law, Daniel Lucier; one daughter-in-law, Belinda Romano; and sisters-in-law, Debra Lowery Vess and Doris Barker.
Helen was preceded in death by her mother, Gertrude Moore; her father, Sam Moore; and a son, Bryan Lowery.
She retired after many years as a elementary school teacher, and taught GED classes at Tri-County Community College for several years.
She was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church and was very active in the church and community during her retirement years.
She was loved by all who met her. She was a faithful servant of God and lived her life according to his Word. Helen rests in peace awaiting that glorious Resurrection morning.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 31, from the Mountain View Chapel with Pastor Valentin Rusu officiating. Jennie Smedlund, 74, of Marble, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2016, in a Murphy hospital.
She was a native of Fulton County, Ga., where she had lived most of her life before moving to Cherokee County in 2009.
Jennie worked for more than 40 years as a human resource manager and retired in 2007 from Southeastern Freight Lines.
She attended Murphy Church of Christ.
She was the daughter of the late Loy Pierce and Sarah Arlina Below Adair.
Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Bill Smedlund; three daughters, Ann Lowe of Conyers, Ga., Jennifer Porter of Charlotte and Erika Smedlund of Franklin, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Diane Jones of Acworth, Ga.; a stepson, David Smedlund of Alpharetta, Ga.; and 11 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, in Murphy Church of Christ with minister Roy Stephenson officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at Murphy Church of Christ.

Barbara Vicknair

Barbara Vicknair, born to the late Lindford and Zola Palmer on Oct. 23, 1939, passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2016.
She was loved by her three children, Brian Vicknair, Jennifer Knibbs-Dawes and David Vicknair; and her son-in-law, Vick Knibbs-Dawes and daughter-in-law, Elle Vicknair. Her grandchildren are Patrick and Brian Hart, and Ansley, Alana, Katon, Samantha and Nicole Vicknair. She is survived by her brothers, Jay, Roy and John Palmer; and her sister, Susie Taylor and brother-in-law Larry Taylor.
She was predeceased by her brother, the late Floyd Palmer.
Not only did Barbara love and cherish her family, but she also placed great value on her community. She served as the first female county commissioner of Cherokee County from 1998 to 2006. She also served as chairman of the Cherokee Indian Community Club from 2013-14 and treasurer in 2015. She served on the board of Balsam West and on the Murphy Town Council from 2009 until her passing. She also served as both president and treasurer of the Valley River Humane Society and was a loving mother to two adopted gorgeous black cats, Mindy and Mia.
Barbara, our mother and dear friend to many, will be missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel. Eulogies will be given by her children, family and friends.

The Rev. Gene Martin, 75, of Marble, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2016, at his home.
Rev. Martin was born June 2, 1941, in Cherokee County to the late Buford Gene Martin and the late Dorthy Sells Martin.
Gene had served as an area pastor for close to 40 years, serving Bealtown Baptist Church, Little Glade Baptist Church and Canyon Road Baptist Church. At the time of his death, he was a member of Little Brasstown Baptist Church.
He had worked as a truck driver with Gooch Trucking Co. and Southern Concrete, and also worked with Cochran Funeral Homes.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mitchell Martin.
Survivors include his wife, Amanda Joyce Johnson Martin; daughter, Bernadette Wilcox and husband Nathan; daughter, Lisa Martin; son, Russell Eugene Martin and wife Andrea; daughter, Miranda Lyda and husband Sean; son, Kelly Martin; brother, Jimmy Sells; special aunt, Sue Hubbard and husband Jim; grandchildren, Autumn Teesateskee, Amanda Gitchell, Jacey Odom, Destiny Kephart, Beah Martin, Bryce Martin, Mathew Nicholson, Chase Martin, Dustin Kephart, Noah Martin, Brandon Kephart, Eli Martin, Daniel Allen, Easton Allen and Ashton Parker; and great-grandchildren, Somer and Isaac Teesateskee and Zayden Gitchell.

Funeral services for Aaron Michael Anderson, 30, of Jacksonville, Ala., were were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016, at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Owens officiating. Burial followed at Seven Springs Cemetery.
Aaron passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, in Anniston, Ala.
Survivors include his parents, Hubert L. Anderson Jr. “Toby” and Sheila Wilcox Anderson; his sister, Amanda Anderson; aunts, Barbara Wilcox, Kay Jenkins (Keith), Linda Reeder (Wayne), Rebecca Anderson (Andy); uncles, Phil Wilcox, Kenny Anderson (Lee); cousins, Nathan, Autumn, Jonathan, Christy, Amy, Julie, Rebecca, Clint and Ryan.
Aaron was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lloyd and Diryl Wilcox, and Hubert L. Anderson Sr. and Virginia Anderson.
Aaron was a lifelong resident of Jacksonville, Ala. He was an alumnus of Jacksonville State University with a master’s degree in public administration. Aaron was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.
He worked at the Anniston Army Depot as a capacity planner and had been employed there for seven years.
Aaron was known for his beautiful smile, contagious laughter and sense of humor. He was quick-witted and fiercely loyal to his family and friends.
Aaron was a member of Leatherwood Baptist Church. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior when he was 9 years old and now lives forever in his heavenly home.
