Roscoe Coker

    Roscoe Coker, 79, of Hayesville, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017, at his residence.
    He was born in Harlin, Ky., to the late Chelcy Coker and Marjorie Campbell Napier.
    Roscoe was owner and operator of a furniture store.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Louetta Coker; two brothers, Ronnie Napier and Walt Napier; and one sister, Joyce Perkins.
    He is survived by three sons, Ross Coker and wife Kelly, Jay Coker and Scott Coker; one daughter, Shanna Couture; two brothers, Curtis Napier and wife Wanda, and Robert Napier and wife Faye; three sisters, Judy Greene and husband Bill, Mary Griffin and Betty Napier; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.
    No services are planned at this time.

Wilma Bell

    Wilma Bell of Troy, Mich., passed away Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017.
    Wilma was born Sept. 22, 1934, to Bill and Blanche Clonts.
    She is survived by her two children, Patsy and Ronnie; and her granddaughter, Tammy. Wilma also is survived by her sister and friend, Lois Taylor of Murphy.
    Wilma was cremated and she is inurned at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy.

    Doris Simone Coates, 81, of Marble, passed away Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, at her residence.
    She was a native of Providence, R.I., and the daughter of the late Philippe LaFlamme and Aldora Dumont LaFlamme.
    She had worked at Levi Strauss & Co. as a seamstress. She was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church. Doris enjoyed sewing, flowers, loved her family, being a mother and raising her children.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert LaFlamme, and sister, Teresa O’Neil.
    She is survived by her husband, Vernon Coates Sr.; three sons, Vernon Coates Jr. “Speedy” and wife Barbara Ann of Grape Creek, Byron Coates and wife Carla of Statesville, and Michael Coates of Hayesville; one daughter, Shareen Meeks; brother, Lionel LaFlamme; sister, Ann Livingston; and 15 grandchildren; Tennille, Torran, Lara, Jason, Jody, Julie, Jamie, Jonathan, Jackie, Cindy, Anthony, Amber, Taylor, Ryan and Chassidy; and plenty of loving great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel of Murphy. Valerie Swisher officiated. Pallbearers were Speedy Coates, Michael Coates, Jason Coates, Torran Meeks, Devin Washington, Dave Kuhn and Weymon Bennett. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
    The family received friends from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home of Murphy.

Horace Cannon

    Horace Samuel Cannon, 85, of Murphy, passed away Friday, Oct. 20, 2017, at Murphy Rehabilitation & Nursing.
    He was a native of Guilford County and son of the late Roy Cannon and Maggie King Cannon.
    Horace had been the plant manager for Levi Strauss & Co. for 25 years.
    He was a U.S. Navy veteran. Horace enjoyed fishing, house boating on Hiwassee Lake and deer hunting.
    He was a member of Grape Creek Baptist Church, and he was a Mason.
    Horace was an active member of the community.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and David Cannon.
    He is survived by his wife, Margaret Cannon; one son, Rodney Dale Cannon and stepson Michael Lee Carter, both of Murphy; one daughter, Cindy Dyson and stepdaughter, Dena Barnett, both of Murphy; and one brother, Bob Cannon of Longwood, Fla.
    Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Revs. Steve West and Lawrence English officiated. Pallbearers were Michael Carter, Joe Barnett, Jeff Radford, Mark Johnson, Eric Hogsed and Steve Spivia. Burial was in Grape Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
    The family received friends from 4-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grape Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 5485 Joe Brown Highway, Murphy, NC 28906.

Walter Birdwell

    Walter Birdwell, 72, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, at Union General Hospital in Blairsville, Ga.
    He was born in Knoxville, Tenn., to the late Jesse Walter and Mary Ruth Bolton Birdwell. He lived most of his life in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and retired to Murphy.
    He was a U.S. Marine veteran. Walter worked for the School Board of Broward County, Fla.
    Photography was his passion, taking landscape photos of the local area.
    Walter was involved with the Warrior’s Veteran’s Outreach in Murphy. He loved to attend and participate at different functions at John C. Campbell Folk School. Walter was a hospice volunteer and never met a stranger.
    He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joanne Birdwell; two daughters, Debbie Nabulsi and husband Nimer of Jacksonville, Fla., and Anne Slater and husband Jeff of Lawrenceville, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Christopher Newman and wife Ashley, Meghan DeAtley, Michael Newman, Jesse DeAtley, Jennifer Newman, Thomas Quackenbush, Alex Nabulsi and twins Spencer and Delaney Nabulsi; and one great-granddaughter, Briley Grace Newman.
    The military honors ceremony was conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, by the VFW Post 10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post 96 and DAV Chapter 73 and American Legion Post 532 of Hayesville and VFW Post 6812 at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any veteran’s organization of your choice.

    Daniel Kenton Parker, 34, of Marble, passed away Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, at his residence.
    He was born Oct. 4, 1983, at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Wash., to John and Lana Parker. Kenton, also known by KP, was named after the frontiersmen, Daniel Boone, and Simon Kenton.
    Kenton is survived by a sister, Joslyn Parker-Booth;  her husband, Michael Booth; his nephew, Malachi Haines;  and a large extended family.
    Kenton enjoyed life, but he also pursued and wrestled with a deeper meaning and purpose. Kenton found peace with his Lord during the latter weeks of his life, but still struggled with the mental and physical aspects of daily living.
    Family will observe a private memorial service and ask that you memorialize Kenton by extending love and working for peace with one another.

    Tim McCoy, 78, of Murphy, passed away Friday, Oct. 27, 2017, at his residence.
    Mr. McCoy was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County, and the son of the late Grady and Dorie Hughes McCoy.
    He was a truck driver for Coble Dairy. Tim was of the Baptist faith.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Alice Farmer McCoy; one son, Chris McCoy; one daughter, Felesha Maney; two brothers, Bill and Richard McCoy; and one sister, Frances Johnson.
    Surviving are one son, Jeff McCoy and wife Trish; one daughter, Tammy Hardin and husband Tracey; two brothers,  J.C. McCoy and wife Mary, and Lloyd McCoy; three sisters, Grace McCoy Cagle, Ruby Queen and Shirley Simonds and husband Jimmy. Also surviving are several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Pastor Matt Mull officiated. Burial was in Unaka Cemetery.

Peter Gilbane Sr.

    Peter Gilbane Sr., 91, of Marble, passed away Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, at his residence.
    He was a native of Leitrim County, Ireland, and the son of the late Peter and Ellen Ward Gilbane.
    Peter was a self-employed general construction contractor. He came to this area from Saugerties, N.Y., in 2006.
    Peter was a member of St. William Catholic Church. He was a Mason and also a member of the BAC (Bricklayers & Allied Craftsman).
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Elizabeth McDonnell Gilbane; two daughters, Eileen Haines and Catherine Gilbane; and one sister, Kathleen Gilbane Kilcline.
    He is survived by three sons, James Gilbane of West Haven, Conn., Peter Gilbane and wife Denise of Marble, and Patrick Gilbane and wife Karyn of Saugerties, N.Y.; one sister, Jane Moran of London; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
    A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at St. William Church. Father Alex Ayala will officiate.

    Delta Lue Totherow, 69, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C.
    She was the daughter of the late Herbert Hoover and Dorothy Lee Duvall Ballew. Delta worked as a seamstress.
    She is survived by her sons, Jeffrey and Gregory Totherow of Murphy; Robert Totherow of Marble; daughters, Alice Williams of Moncks Corner, S.C., and Angela Rogers of Murphy; brother, Dan Ballew of Newnan, Ga.; sister, Sue Carpenter of Georgetown, Tenn.; nephew, Mark Carpenter; 24 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at Temple Baptist Church. Pastor Don Padgett officiated. Pallbearers were Gregory, Robert, Cody and Jeff Totherow, Josh Holt and Mark Lovingood. Burial was in Temple Baptist Church Cemetery.
    The family received friends from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at Temple Baptist Church.
