    Mary C. Hulse, 70, of Murphy, passed away suddenly on Monday, Oct. 2, 2017.
    Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford, S.D., www.wassfuneralhome.com, with visitation one hour prior to services.
    A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Morganton, Ga. 
    Mary spent most of her life in South Sioux City, Neb., and then moved to Murphy. She graduated from South Sioux City High School and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. She worked for Sioux Tools until she retired.
    She was active in the Master Gardener program and the Lutheran church. Mary also enjoyed painting and genealogy.
    She is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Robinson of Spartanburg, S.C.; and Anne Hulse and her husband, Nour, of Knoxville, Tenn.; granddaughter, Annabelle Hulse; her sister, Jayne Wessels and her husband, Wayne, of Centerville, S.D.; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and many dear friends.

    Carroll Lynn Payne, 60, of Marble, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017.
    He was born in Gaston County. Carroll was the son of Jack Stiles Payne and Colleen Johnson Payne of Marble.
    He worked at Team Industries in the shipping and handling department.
    Carroll enjoyed outdoor activities: deer hunting, dove hunting with his grandson, Brady Payne, and fishing with his beloved wife. He spent many days at the lake with close friends. Riding four-wheelers was a daily activity that Carroll enjoyed.
    Most of all, Carroll loved spending time with his family.
    He was known generously by his impeccable work ethic. Carroll always loved to smile.
    Crocket, the family pet, was the joy of his life, and Carroll was a proud daddy of his dog.
    In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Marion Crawford Payne; one daughter, Jennifer Payne Eller of Marble; one grandson, Brady Payne of Andrews; and one great-grandson, Maverick Payne.
    A gathering of friends and family were held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews.

    Gene Alvin Dockery, 78, of Murphy, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, surrounded by family.
    He was the son of the late Lewis Arthur Dockery and Ruby Sneed Dockery. Gene was a U.S. Army veteran, where he served as a truck driver in Fort Org, Calif. He was a truck driver by trade. Gene was an avid outdoorsmen and enjoyer of bluegrass music.  Gene was a Godly man and treasured father, brother and grandfather.
    Gene was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Rita Annalee Dockery; brothers Horace and Stanley Dockery, and beloved sister, Stella Dockery Jones. He is survived by one son, Douglas Baines and wife Kendra; three daughters, Karen Dockery, Tina Dockery, Sheri Moore and husband Larry; brothers Arnold Dockery and wife Pat, Sheridan Dockery and wife Patsy; and Sister Grace Dockery Cook and husband Teddy.
    Gene was the treasured Papaw of Kaila Prentice and husband Mathew, Whitney Bradshaw and husband Brandon, and Hunter Moore. He left behind great-grandchildren Brandi Bradshaw, Matysen Prentice, Georgia Moore and Silas Bradshaw.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturdays Oct. 14, 2017, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy.  The Revs. Jack Hurley Jr. and Kenny White officiated. Pallbearers  were David and Darren Cook, Brandon Bradshaw, Hunter Moore, Mathew Prentice and Richard Thomas.  Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Curtis, Scott Roberts, Charles Beaver, Louie Oliver and Ricky Hurley. Burial will be in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.
    The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct.13, 2017, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.
    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family to help with expenses.

Wanda Edwards

    Wanda Mae Edwards, 87, of Murphy, passed away Friday, Oct. 13, 2017, at a Blairsville, Ga., assisted living facility.
    She was a native of Graham County, but had lived in Cherokee County most of her life.
    Wanda was valedictorian of her Swain County high school class. She was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, and a member of the Murphy Garden Club.  She was a member of Murphy First Baptist Church, where she was active in WMU, served as a Sunday school teacher and worked with vacation Bible school.
    She was the daughter of the late Will D. and Clara Cable Jenkins and the wife of the late Herman Edwards, who passed away June 3, 2000. She also was preceded in death by four sisters, Ada Higdon, Helen Cooper, Beatrice Blankenship, and Cleo Womach; and two brothers, Scott and Oliver Jenkins.
    Surviving are a daughter, Betts Stiles and husband, Ricky Joe of Marble; two sons, Mark Edwards of Murphy and Bruce Edwards of Ithaca, New York; four grandchildren, Holly Christy, Jackson Stiles, Jeremiah Edwards, and Sun Edwards; and four great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Edwards, Khloe Edwards, Zayin Edwards, and Imani Edwards.
    A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Wanda Mae Edwards to the Murphy First Baptist Church, 517 Hiwassee St., Murphy, NC  28906.

Lenna Hatchett

    Lenna Lee Hughes Hatchett, 93, of the Bellview community west of Murphy, passed away Friday, Oct. 13, 2017, in a Murphy care facility.
    She was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County. She was a member of Bellview United Methodist Church.  She loved working in the garden and was an excellent cook. Lenna’s greatest love was her family.
    Lenna was born April 22, 1924, to the late Harvey Lee Hughes and Dixie Jane Brown Hughes. She was the wife of the late John Lofton Hatchett, Sr., who died April 7, 2002. She also was preceded in death by a son, Stephen P. Hatchett, and eight siblings.
    Surviving are two daughters, Wanda Gay H. Ledford and husband L.B. of Brasstown, and Tammy H. Posey of Cumming, Ga.; a son, John Lofton Hatchett Jr. and wife, Ginger of Murphy; daughter-in-law, Marianne Hatchett; ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, at Bellview United Methodist Church with lay minister Bill Hughes officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
    Pallbearers will be Larry Ledford, Tripp Ledford, John Posey III, Christopher Posey, Ian Terry and Jeff Fowler. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Anderson, Harry Hughes, Joe May, Jimmy Anderson and Perry Hughes.
    The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Bellview United Methodist Church prior to the service.

    Dennis Rose, 66, of Turtletown, Tenn., passed away Oct. 6, 2017.
    Born in Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Mary Dockery Rose. He was a plant operator for many years for the Tennessee Chemical Company and was a jack of many other trades.
    He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Joyce Rose; brother, Steven Russell Rose and one sister, Patricia
Williams.
    Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Louellen Rose; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Jill Rose, and Johnny and Brittney Gobble; grandchildren, Donovan Rose, Alexandra Gobble, Brooklyn Gobble and Rykerr Obadiah Gobble; brothers, Curtis (Brenda) Taylor, Anthony Rose; sisters, Betty Rose, Karen (Ken) Hyatt, Hope (Stephen)Douglas; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Doug and Marsha Gobble, John and Marty Fowler and Mike and Maria Mull.
    Graveside services were conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, from Garrett’s Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Smith officiating.
    Serving as pallbearers were Chris Mull, Floyd Davis, Mike Hamby, Derrick Cearley, Travis McCollum, Dakota Dillard and Duke Hamby. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to the Snack in a Back Pack organization for the Copper Basin School Systems.

    Sharon Ann Warford Whitin died peacefully among family on Aug. 27, 2017, in Easton, Conn., at the age of 67.
    Sharon had become ill with cancer and she moved to Easton to be with her twin sister, Susan.
    Sharon is survived by her children Tiffany Kincaid, William Whitin, Erik Whitin, and Kelly Whitin; grandchildren Katrina Ware, Krystal Goodman, Kathlyn Suarez, Rayden Whitin and Talen Whiten. Sharon also is survived by her siblings Susan Winter, Tricia Maddrey, Chris Warford and Bonnie Warford; and six nieces and nephews.
    Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Aileen Warford of Miami, Fla.; husband, Jim Whitin; son, Keel Whitin; and sister Pam Warford.
    Sharon was born on Feb. 16, 1950, in Tampa, Fla. After her childhood in Florida, she resided on the West Coast until 1991, when her family moved back to Miami.
Eventually, Sharon and her family settled in Murphy, where she had lived for the last 24 years.  
    Sharon was very active in her church, Murphy Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she was a deaconess and prayer warrior. Sharon was an avid painter and loved crafts She enjoyed gardening, vegetarian cooking and playing cards. Sharon was a gentle, loving soul, and is greatly missed by her family and friends.
    A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 21, 2017, at Murphy Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1576 Old Ranger Road in Murphy, with a luncheon preceding at 12:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall.
    Pastor Don Yancheson will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Sharon’s life.

    Frances Sue Rowland, 81, of Marble passed away Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.  
    Frances was the daughter of the late John Beaver and
Rose Cordelia Passmore. She was a homemaker and member of Rowland Hill Baptist Church.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Clinton Rowland; daughter, Rhonda Rowland Pratt and granddaughter, Melinda Ann
Nichols.
    She is survived by her son, Michael Garrett and wife Linda; daughters, Carolyn Rowland and husband Alvin, Debbie Fleming and husband Ronald and Lesha Cornwell and husband Charlie; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, at Rowland Hill Baptist Church in Marble. James Stalcup, the Rev. Donald Watkins and the Rev. Matt Mull officiated. Pallbearers were grandsons. Burial will be in Rowland Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
    The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy, where the body will remain until being placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service hour.

    Katherine “Kathy” Jean Hardin, 50, of Andrews, passed away Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, at her home.
    Kathy was the daughter of Robert and Martha Pullium. She was a member of Valley River Baptist Church, and worked as a phlebotomist at District Memorial Hospital and Murphy Medical Center.
    She will be missed by her dog, Ellie Mae, and all of her farm animals.
    In addition to her parents, she is survived by sisters, Angie Mayfield and husband James, and Robbin Raxter and husband Michael; niece, Melissa Garcia; and nephews, Robert Mayfield, Dakota Gibby and Brody Raxter.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews. The Rev. Bo Phillips officiated, and a eulogy was given by Lois Adams. Pallbearers were Mike Sharp, Kenneth Bradley, Oden Watts, Dakota Gibby, Brody Raxter and Maurice Piercy. Honorary pallbearers were David Holland, Henry Burrell, Chuck Drake, Robert Mayfield and Adam Koehler. Burial followed in Valleytown Cemetery.
    The family received friends from 1-2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Townson-Rose Chapel in Andrews.

    James A. Geiger, 87, of Murphy and formerly of Bradenton, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, after a long illness.
    He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in Korea from 1951-54. He was manager over school bus transportation at Department of Manatee School System.
    Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Regina; sons, Paul of Palmetto, Fla., Jody of Murphy; and foster son, Bert and wife Cheri of Vero Beach, Fla.
    Interment will be in Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga.

    Charles Devine, 57, of Murphy, passed away Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, at Mission Hospital in Asheville.
    He was born in Shelby County, Ky., to the late Charles Thomas Devine Sr. and Dorothy Shaver Devine.
    He was owner and operator of a tow-truck service.
    Charles loved his family, racing, horseback riding, camping and cooking out.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Rebecca Devine; and one brother, Jimmy Schuck.
    He is survived by his wife, Wendy Devine; one son, Charles Thomas Devine III; one brother, Terry Devine; and four grandchildren.
    A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The family will receive friends after the service.

    Annie Ruth “Ann” (Greene) McClure, 78, of Hayesville, and formerly of Marietta, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017.
    Ann was born in Cherokee County to the late Jesse and Celia (Barrett) Greene.
    She was a cosmetologist and homemaker. She loved spending time with family and friends, traveling, antique car shows and playing cards with friends.
    Ann enjoyed working at the Old Cupboard Antiques.
    She also loved to sing and play the piano. She enjoyed music, and some of her favorite musicians were Jim Brickman, Karen Carpenter and Elvis.
    She enjoyed her retirement in the mountains.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Howard McClure; her brother, Kenneth Greene; and her grandson, Brandon Abbas Khani.
    Ann is survived by her brother, William O. “Happy” (Carol Ann) Greene of Ball Ground, Ga.; her niece, Lee Ann Greene Busby of Ball Ground, Ga.; and her nephew, Charles McClure of Young Harris, Ga.
    Survivors include her son, Danny (Terri) McClure of Dallas, Ga.; her daughters, Linda McClure Cook of Smyrna, Ga., Janice McClure Khani of Carrollton, Ga., Lisa (Frank) Edwards of Powder Springs, Ga., and Nancy (Dan) Rasmussen of Adamstown, Md.
    Her grandchildren include  Nichole (Brannon) Harris, Sarah (Jared) Worley, Alexander Khani, Jeremy Khani, Andy Rasmussen and Emily Rasmussen.
    Her great-grandchildren include Dylan, Hannah, Connor and Logan Harris, along with Samuel and Elizabeth Ann Worley.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Rev. Ricky Rogers officiated. Burial was in Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Young Harris, Ga.
    The family received friends from noon-2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.
