Austin Kitchens

    Austin Dale Kitchens, 22, of Murphy, passed away Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, at his residence.
    He was born in Habersham County, Ga., to the late James David Kitchens, and Tabitha Kitchens of Cleveland, Ga.
    Austin was a member of Unaka Baptist Church.
    In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sisters, Katlyn Kitchens of Cleveland, Ga., and Taylor Kitchens of Suches, Ga.; paternal grandparents, William and Ruby Capps; and maternal grandfather, Harold Ayers.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at Unaka Baptist Church. The Rev. Bill Trotter will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Cody Kitchens, Jamie Kitchens, James Kitchens, James Ayers, Michael Graves and Jason Heuck.
    The family will receive friends from noon-2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at Unaka Baptist Church.
    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to help the family with funeral expenses.

    Betty Catherine Decker Ingram of Murphy died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, with her family by her side.  
    She was preceded in death by her parents, Wade M Decker and Bonnie McDonald Decker; brother, Billy Clyde Decker; and sister, Linda Decker Jones.
    Betty was very active in both the social and business communities of Murphy.  She and Harry co-owned Ingram Appliance prior to retirement.
    Earlier in her career, she worked for Hilton Business Equipment, ASAP Printing and Office Supplies, and helped establish the Truett Baptist Association, of which she was the first secretary.  She also was the treasurer of the Cherokee Country Ministerial Association for many years.  
    In her younger days, Betty was a member of Murphy Squares, Murphy Jaycettes  and Murphy Rescue Squad Auxiliary. She was a very active member of Murphy First Baptist Church for many years, where she was a leader and participated in many activities. She was an avid Red Hatter and was currently a member of Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church.  
    Betty is survived by her husband of almost 62 years, M. Harry Ingram; daughter Victoria (Vickie) Ingram Dockery and son-in-law  Randy Dockery of Murphy; daughter Sandra (Sandi) Ingram Reynolds and son-in-law Bob Reynolds of Atlanta, Ga.; granddaughter Melissa Dockery Gentles and husband Ben Gentles; granddaughter Sara Dockery Hickey and husband Mark Hickey; great-grandsons, Chris, Austin and Andrew Thompson, Davey and Daniel Hickey; and great-granddaughter, Hailey Thompson; sisters, Verna Lee Kephart and Carol Greene (Bill); brother, Don Decker (Donna); and many nieces and nephews who were very special to Betty.
    A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church.
    In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Cherokee County Ministerial Association, P.O. Box 1422, Murphy, NC  28906.

    Ashley James, 33, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and formerly of Marble, passed away Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, in a Nashville, Tenn., hospital.
    She was a native of Cherokee County, but had been living in Murfreesboro the past six years. She was a graduate of Western Carolina University.
    Ashley was working as a senior analyst for Verizon Wireless.
    She was of the Baptist faith.
    Ashley loved life and was loved by all she knew.
    She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Paul “Brownie” and Katie Passmore Parker; her paternal grandparents, Arthur “Jesse” and Annie Sue Derreberry James; and her step-paternal grandmother, Laura Raxter James.
    Surviving are her parents, Audy and Pamela Parker James of Hayesville; a brother, Andy James and wife Aneka of Hayesville; a niece, Landry, and a nephew, Wyatt.
    A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, in Andrews First Baptist Church with Dr. Calvin Bobo officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Verizon Wireless in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
    The family will receive friends from 1-2:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Andrews First Baptist Church prior to the services.

    John Philip Fernandez, 47, of Murphy, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, at his home.
    John was born Nov. 19, 1969, in Kansas City, Mo., to Donald Raymond Sr. and Minnie Rose (Nash) Fernandez.
    He married Wanda Marie Wynn of Lutz, Fla., on Feb. 6, 1993. She survives of the home, along with his four-legged son, Mister.
    Additional survivors include two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Donald Jr. and Gail Fernandez of Richmond, Mo., and Joseph and Dianna Fernandez of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Linda and Kevin Pemburlin of Richmond, Susan Fernandez- Garrett of Elmira, Mo., Amy Fernandez-Paris of Cunningham, Kan., and Mary and Jeff Harding of Chillicothe, Mo.
    In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his grandmother, Marie Mahar.
    John was born in Kansas City, Mo., and moved to Richmond as a child. He graduated from Richmond High School.
    John had always been a hardworking man even at a young age, where he mowed many lawns in Richmond and worked as a bagger at the grocery store.
    After high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served his country for 24 years as an Air Force administrative specialist reaching the rank of master sergeant, and retiring in 2012. John had served overseas during the first Gulf War, where he met his wife. He also served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom while stationed overseas in Turkey.
   The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Disabled American Veterans in honor of Master Sergeant John P. Fernandez.
    Private family graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at Woodland Cemetery in Richmond.  Full military honors were provided by the Whiteman Air Force Base Honor Guard.

    William “Bill” Jack Hughes, 86, of Murphy, passed away at home on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017.
    Bill was a native of Cherokee County, and the youngest son of 16 children of the late W. Astor Hughes and Lillie Bell Crisp Hughes.
    He was a U.S. World War II Army veteran, and served in Germany 1948-50 as part of the 862nd Engineer Aviation Battalion at Rheem Air Force Base.
    Bill was a retired boilermaker with Boilermaker’s National.
    He enjoyed gardening, fishing and playing the guitar.
    Bill was a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Moore Hughes; one daughter, Wanda Hughes Roberts; one grandson, John Clark; eight brothers, Otis Hughes, Walter Hughes, Harford Hughes, Emory Hughes, Bradford Hughes, Wayne Postell, Grady Postell and George Postell; and five sisters, Louise Lance, Edna Stalcup, Jo Williams, Ruth Owensby and Christine Anderson.
    He is survived by one brother, Clay Hughes of Oregon; his children, Mike Hughes of South Carolina, Brenda Williams and husband Tim of Copperhill, Tenn., and Randy Hughes and wife Wendy of Candler; grandchildren, Jessica Chadwick, Heather Bresch, Adrienne Clark Higdon, Brandon Hughes and Brooke Hughes; and great-grandchildren, Kayla Brooks, Rhowan Bresch and Susanna Chadwick.
    Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Townson Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Rev. Derek Tilley officiated. Burial was in Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post 10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post 96 and DAV Chapter 73, and American Legion Post 532 of Hayesville and VFWPost 6812. Pallbearers were Neil Chadwick, Jeremy Bresch, Alan Moore, David Yonce, Jason Killian and Larry Curtis. Honorary pallbearers were Tim Panter and Harold Moore.

    Mary Catherine Amos, 92, of Andrews, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, in a Murphy care facility.
    She was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County. Catherine was a homemaker and member of Valleytown Baptist Church.
    She was the daughter of the late Gordon Wilson Sr. and Glennie Powers Wilson, and wife of the late Clyde S. Amos Sr., who died April 10, 2002. She was preceded in death by a sister, Janice Holloway; and three brothers, Gordon Wilson Jr., Keith Wilson and Carroll Wilson.
    Surviving are three daughters, Helen Ruth Phillips and husband Lane of Andrews, Sandra Joyce Jenkins and husband Kerry and Darlene Scroggs and husband Giles, all of Marble; two sons, Clyde Amos Jr. and wife Sharon of Hendersonville, and David Amos and wife Lisa of Ball Ground, Ga.; a sister, Lois Waldroup of Andrews; 12 grandchildren, six step grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, in Valleytown Baptist Church with the Revs. Harold Stiles and Eric Byrd, and John Cook officiating. The interment will be in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Cook, Tony and Donnie Ray Bradley, Alan Morgan, Mike Allison and David Stalcup. Honorary pallbearers will be Earl West and Ronnie Bradley.

Burke Moore

    Burke Edward Moore, 80, of Murphy, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017, at his residence.
    Burke was born in Murphy on Sept. 4, 1937. He was a 1968 graduate of Western Carolina University.
    Burke taught for 30 years in Cherokee County Schools. He was a teacher at Ranger Elementary School for two years, principal at Unaka School for four years, White Church School for four years, and Murphy Elementary School for 19 years.
    After retiring from education, he worked in management at Taco Bell, Piggly Wiggly Markets, Long John Silvers and United Grocery Outlet. Burke’s last job was working with Wells & West of Murphy.
    Burke appeared in the Outstanding Educators in America, Who’s Who in North Carolina and Personalities of the South. He was a member of the Principal’s Division of the North Carolina Association of Educators, and past president of Murphy Civitan Club, where he had perfect attendance.
    Burke also was a leader of the Boy Scouts for many years.
    Burke was a Ruling Elder Emeritus at Providence Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Murphy.
    He was the son of the late Thomas Cloe and Miriam Gray Moore, and husband of the late Patricia Kaylor, who died Feb. 24, 2010, after nearly 48 years of marriage. He also was preceded in death by a son, Burke Edward Moore Jr., who died July 17, 1985.
    Surviving are a daughter, Katrina Palmer and husband Edward of Murphy; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Hartness and husband Charles, and Ethan Palmer and wife Nichole, all of Murphy; two great-granddaughters, Alaina and Leah Palmer; a sister, Betty Jean and husband Bud L. Brown of Lenoir; a brother, Tom and wife Shirley Stiles Moore of Simpsonville, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, with the Rev. David Hina officiating. The interment will be in Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Wilson officiating. Pallbearers will be Ethan Palmer, Charles Hartness, Geoff and Josh Grubb, Zack Stockbridge and Steve Yount.
    The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.

    June Clara Flowers, 63, of Andrews, passed away Thursday, Sept. 29, 2017, at her residence.
    She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County. June was the daughter of the late Roy and Medley Brown Rogers.
    She was a salesperson in a shoe store.
    June was a member of Valleytown Baptist Church.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Jane Hogsed.
    She is survived by her husband, Don Ray Flowers; three sons, Kelly Flowers, Donny Flowers and Andy Flowers; one daughter, Angela and Jeremiah Johnson; four brothers, Johnny Rogers and wife Vivian, Danny Rogers, Sammy Rogers and wife Connie, and Jimmy Rogers and wife Geneva; two sisters, Shirley Whitaker and husband Don, and Judy Kephart and husband Ricky; one grandson, Sebastian Flowers; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and
great-nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at Valleytown Baptist Church. Pastor Eric Byrd and the Rev. Patrick O’Dell officiated. Burial was in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers were David Earwood, Paul Earwood, Edwin Flowers, Tony Pendergrass, Jeremiah Johnson, Anthony Flowers and Randy Cable.

    David Jesse Bales, 67, of the Towstring community in Cherokee, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, at his home.
    A native of Cherokee, he was the son of Lela Lambert Bales of Cherokee and the late Shady Bales.
    He was a member of Towstring Baptist Church.
    David had a great love for music and played the guitar and banjo, and sang in church and with his family. He was also a preacher.
    David was preceded in death by his son, David Ethan Bales.
    In addition to his mother, he is survived by his daughters, Sandra Faye Bales of Asheville, Angela Rose Freeman of Marble, Cynthia Renae Lundy of Hayesville; five grandchildren; three sisters, Gladys Cochran, Glenna Cunningham and Elizabeth Ledford; one brother, Oscar Bales; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home in Bryson City. The Rev. Tim Barker officiated, with burial following in Towstring Cemetery.
    The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the funeral home.

    Bobby Cornwell, 70, of Murphy, passed away Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017, at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn.
    He was born in Ducktown, Tenn., to the late Arthur and Mary Lou Cornwell.
    Bobby was a self-employed carpenter. He attended Rowland Hill Baptist Church.
    In addition to his parents. he was preceded death by one son, Jimmy Roberson; one daughter, Barbara Roberson; and two brothers, Jackie McMillain and Bill Cornwell.
    He is survived by his wife, Hazel Cornwell; three sons, three daughters, several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Rev. Matt Mull and Pastor Harold Stiles officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Preston Graves, John Pendergrass, Max Shipman and Josh Deese. Honorary pallbearers were Whitey Sutton, Dewayne Patterson and Ray Cody.

Thomas Atkinson Sr.

    Thomas Leroy Atkinson Sr., 76, of Blairsville, Ga., passed away Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, at his residence.
     He was born in Atlanta, Ga., but had lived here since 2000. Tommy was the son of the late Louie Leroy and Florence Lorene Callaway Atkinson.
    He was in the U.S. Air Force in Special Forces, serving in the Vietnam War.
    Tommy loved to restore old cars. He coached football, basketball and baseball for Little League for many years in Duluth, Ga. Tommy had a special love for children. He loved his family and grandchildren.
    Tommy retired from Georgia Power after working 15 years as a lineman and 26 years as a lawyer in their legal department.
    Tommy was a member of Tomotla Baptist Church.
    He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jeanette Johnson Atkinson; two sons, Thomas Leroy Atkinson Jr. and wife Jennifer of Loganville, Ga., and James Allen Atkinson and wife Mary; one sister, Nita Atkinson Florence and husband Norman of Tampa, Fla.; four grandsons, Drew, Colton, Corley and Hayden; three granddaughters, EvyAnne, Victoria and Alexandra.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at Tomotla Baptist Church. James Atkinson and Pastor Harold Stiles officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post No. 10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post No. 96 and DAV Chapter No. 73, and American Legion Post No. 532 of Hayesville and VFW Post No. 6812.

    Mary Catherine Amos, 92, of Andrews, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, in a Murphy care facility.
    She was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County. Catherine was a homemaker and member of Valleytown Baptist Church.
    She was the daughter of the late Gordon Wilson Sr. and Glennie Powers Wilson, and wife of the late Clyde S. Amos Sr., who died April 10, 2002. She was preceded in death by a sister, Janice Holloway; and three brothers, Gordon Wilson Jr., Keith Wilson and Carroll Wilson.
    Surviving are three daughters, Helen Ruth Phillips and husband Lane of Andrews, Sandra Joyce Jenkins and husband Kerry and Darlene Scroggs and husband Giles, all of Marble; two sons, Clyde Amos Jr. and wife Sharon of Hendersonville, and David Amos and wife Lisa of Ball Ground, Ga.; a sister, Lois Waldroup of Andrews; 12 grandchildren, six step grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, in Valleytown Baptist Church with the Revs. Harold Stiles and Eric Byrd, and John Cook officiating. The interment was in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Cook, Tony and Donnie Ray Bradley, Mike Allison and David Stalcup. Honorary pallbearer was Earl West.
    The family received friends from 1-2:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Valleytown Baptist Church prior to the services.
    Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews, was in charge of all arrangements.
